Even as the ink is still drying on the fiscal cliff deal, Republicans are gearing up for several other upcoming deadlines, including the looming debt ceiling, which they promise not to raise unless they can extract political concessions from President Obama. Failure to raise the debt ceiling carries dire consequences, and in case anyone is under the impression that Republicans are unaware of those consequences, or dont believe they are serious, ThinkProgress has flagged a Fox News Sunday interview in which Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner makes those consequences crystal clear, telling Chris Wallace that a government default would be a financial disaster, not only for us, but for the worldwide economy.

(25,241 posts)to raise the 'debt ceiling'. For godsakes John - show a little courage and do the right thing for a change. Continuing to sandbag on this and other issues is just sealing your fate and the fate of the future of your Party. You are facing extinction unless you start showing that you are doing the People's business and why they elected you - and are not there to score 'political points'.
Oh yeah - if that's what you are there for - in you own words John - "There's the door".

(15,237 posts)It is not the first mess they have created, let happen then tried to blame on someone else. Boehner could care less about political concessions he knows he is expected to engineer this mess and sacrifice himself an old common practice in Republican politics.

(1,140 posts)But the blame will be pinned squarely on him and his party if it happens. I certainly don't want it to happen, but this is a game of chicken that they can either A. Lose by raising the debt ceiling, or B. Lose by not raising it.
Sucks to be them, but hey, its not like they didn't put themselves in this situation willingly.
