Sunday Talk Shows

Last edited Sun Jan 6, 2013, 10:16 AM - Edit history (1)

Meet the Press
This Sunday: After the fiscal cliff, the focus turns to the next fight in the new Congress over spending. The president drew a line in the sand saying he won't negotiate over raising the country's debt limit, but Republicans have vowed to use it as a bargaining chip to get more spending cuts. Sunday, we'll talk to the man who negotiated with the White House on behalf of the GOP and now must navigate a divided party through the next big fight: Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell

Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, the two men the president chose to study the country's fiscal woes and who have made it their mission to get the nation's debt under control, say the fiscal cliff deal doesn't go nearly far enough and that lawmakers missed a "magic moment" to do something big. They'll join us exclusively Sunday to tell us what needs to be done in the critical weeks ahead to get the country back on a sustainable fiscal path.

The battle lines for the next fight were already being drawn before the members of the 113th Congress were sworn into office. Can Washington tackle the tough issues ahead, like raising the country's debt limit, in such a politically charged environment? Plus: Turmoil in the Republican party as even members of the party's leadership split their votes on the final deal. Has Speaker Boehner's power diminished in the wake of this bruising fight? Joining us: Freshman Senator from Maine Angus King (I-ME), former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich Chair of the House Democratic Caucus Rep. Xavier Becerra , former head of HP and Vice Chair of the NRSC Carly Fiorina and Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne

Will the 113th have a new attitude?

Incoming Senators Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., share what they hope for in the coming years. Plus, insight from two Congressmen who have been out of the Capitol for a number of years, Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Minn., and Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz., plus Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Penn

How's the economy handling the "fiscal cliff" deal? And what should we expect from Fiscal Cliff Round II? The New York Times' David Sanger and TIME's Rana Foroohar offer their insight.

ABC This Week
The man in the middle of this week's fiscal cliff deal, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell speaks to George Stephanopoulos, Sunday on "This Week."

After walking up to the edge of the fiscal cliff, Congress worked through the New Year to finally passed an eleventh-hour deal. But did the smaller agreement on tax cuts simply kick the can down the road, setting up a bigger battle over spending cuts and the debt limit in a matter of weeks? How will Congress respond to President Obama's refusal to negotiate on raising the debt ceiling? And will Republicans in Congress reject any further revenue increases?

Then, can fresh faces in Washington help break the gridlock? As the 113th Congress begins, three key new members – Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., and Rep. Joaquín Castro, D-Texas, and Rep. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. come to "This Week."

Plus, the powerhouse roundtable debates all the week's political battles in Washington, with ABC News' George Will; Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren; PBS' "Washington Week" moderator and managing editor Gwen Ifill; University of California, Berkeley professor and former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich; and ABC's Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl

Fox News Sunday
With government spending on the block and a debt limit deadline upping the stakes, are we in for more bare-knuckle politics and a finish at the bell? John Roberts asks two key congressmen, Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Jim Jordan

We’ll hear from a new voice in “the world’s greatest deliberative body”, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), about the challenges facing the Congress and the Republican Party.

CNN State of The Union
With both parties bruised over the fiscal cliff wrangling, how will Congress tackle the next fights over spending and the debt ceiling? Plus, President Obama is expected to outline his 2nd term agenda in the next few days, but how much can he accomplish in a gridlocked Washington? We’ll talk to Senator Dick Durbin, the number two Democrat in the Senate, and influential Republican Senator Lindsey Graham

Can new members change business as usual in Congress? We’ll talk to two Freshman: Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D) of North Dakota and Congressman Richard Hudson (R) of North Carolina.

This week’s drama over the fiscal cliff exposed deep political and policy chasms between both sides. Progressives insist they’re not compromising on spending, while Conservatives insist cuts must be put in place soon. We’ll talk with Neera Tanden from the Center for American Progress, right-leaning economist Stephen Moore, CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash, and Jackie Calmes of the New York Times.

Fareed Zakaria GPS
On GPS Sunday: The fiscal cliff deal, talking 2013 and the long road for Syria

On Fareed Zakaria GPS this Sunday, Fareed offers his take on the fiscal cliff deal – and why the agreement may be a small victory for sanity, but how the United States faces a much deeper challenge.
Then, a panel of leading commentators, including Anne-Marie Slaughter, Richard Haas and Ian Bremmer offer their predictions for the year ahead, and what 2013 might bring for Syria, Iran, China, Europe, and the United States.

In our What in the World segment, Fareed takes a look at the recent mass protests in India over a deadly rape. Is this India's Arab Spring moment? And GPS also hears from commentators Anatole Kaletsky and Lionel Barber on the U.S. economy, while London School Economics Professor Fawaz Gerges explains why the conflict in Syria isn’t anywhere near being finished.

President Barack Obama's second inauguration is right around the corner. It will be quite the party in DC, if 2008 was any indication. But after the party, what will become of the Democratic Party? We'll dig into what the Dems need to do sustain the momentum of November's electoral gains. We'll welcome former Vermont governor Howard Dean to weigh in on that.

We'll also have Kevin Drum of Mother Jones at the table to discuss his illuminating new feature story on lead and its links to crime, low IQ, and ADHD. (Here's a link if you haven't yet read it: http://goo.gl/K4RoH.) We'll also welcome Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed to talk about his state's regressive policies towards the poor, which you can read about in this Slate.com story: http://goo.gl/Y7C6T

The Paper - It's a sure sign of the digital times when the New Orleans Times-Picayune, published every day for 175 years, goes to a three-day-a-week publishing schedule. As Morley Safer reports, it's a fate many more newspapers face as the Internet becomes the source of almost instantaneous news.

Design Thinking - The term refers to incorporating human behavior into design and David Kelley and his Silicon Valley company IDEO have used this approach to create some of the world's most iconic products, like the stand-up toothpaste tube and the computer mouse for Apple.

Barca - Barcelona's soccer team may be the best of all time thanks to a unique training system that produced 17 of the football club's current 25 first-line players -- including Lionel Messi, considered the best player in the world.

The 112th Congress reached an agreement to avert a fiscal crisis and adjourned for a final time last week. Now that the 113th Congress has been sworn in, can the incoming members help break the gridlock before lawmakers must find consensus on raising the debt ceiling? Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate minority leader, and Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House minority leader, are among the members of Congress who join the Sunday shows this week to weigh in.
