(149,584 posts)The national spotlight is on this little town. Maybe all the attention will help get the facts out...

(2 posts)The town is not going to change just because it's getting some bad publicity. The local people will circle the wagons and the interlocking clique of local officials and small business owners who run things in Steubenville will intimidate any local who might want to make noise about this. What will get the facts out is a federal prosecutor with no local connections who can bring intense pressure on the people involved. Once one person cracks and is willing to testify the rest will fall like dominoes. Once people start testifying because they know they've been implicated by someone else, no one is going to want to find out that they didn't cut a deal when they still had a chance.

(115,674 posts)unless they can establish federal jurisdiction over the crime, and rape is generally a state crime. If the victim was taken across state lines, for example, the feds could get involved. Otherwise the state/local people will have the case - unfortunately.

(61,588 posts)There are photos of seemingly underage girls on one of the football booster's blog. It looks like the photos were taken through peepholes in the high school girl's bathroom. Possession of photos of child pornography is a federal matter. Possession of photos of underage girls being raped - which existed according to the grand jury testimony of witnesses for the prosecution, per newspaper articles - would be a federal matter.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,674 posts)And that would confer federal jurisdiction. I hope so! Looks like the locals won't do what they should be doing.

(61,588 posts)They should take a close look at that guy's blog. I'm not going to link it because it contains names and email addresses of underage girls.

(69 posts)I lived in this county my whole life and things have not changed and it has always been corrupt. The sherrif's brother is a drug dealer the other is a bookie. Drugs run rampant in the cities in this county and everyone knows who the drug dealers are and they go left untouched. The old saying was if you want to get away with murder move to Jefferson County and that is still the same. This case will never be prosecuted correctly unless it is taken out of everyone ones hands from this county. The feds need to come in and deal with it. I left this county for a reason and I have no desire to ever go back.

Looks to be a guy behind that mask, not that that should matter. All people with a heart are against the rape crew.

(55,981 posts)that rape isnt cool, and clearly isnt acceptable.
I appeal to those men that mistakenly think they are tougher than women, "if you think that you are tougher than women, then you should also think you have a responsibility to protect them." It would be better if you would recognize that women are as tough as men and IMO, in many ways a lot tougher. Men should respect women and respect their right to be free from rape and free from the fear of rape.

(20,043 posts)rapist the way victims are (at least in some cases attempted) shamed we may see some progress. Protests at every rape trial. Maybe, who knows.
I remember reading a story where a rapist was sentenced to 8 years in prison for raping a 8 year old girl--more than once. It was at the same time that Jim Bakker was sentenced to 45 years in prison. I know I couldn't be the only one that sees something wrong with that.

(20,219 posts)Everyone knows that without consequences, destructive behavior spirals out of control.
But rape cultures show their concern is for the male perpetrators; the female victims are blamed and shamed.
It's about fucking time Justice got its fucking priorities straight.
