Will Americans Ever Get To See Al Jazeera?

Even though Al Jazeera is considered "controversial", competitors "fear its reputation for news excellence".

Why does our media system attract so many uninformed and unbrave people who are locked into such predictable and parochial attitudes? Do they have an agenda that the public is unaware of?

Take Time Warner. Remember how it initially would not run the then new red white and blue Fox News on its platform in New York City, forcing it to cough up a high "per-subscriber fee" to get on the air? That was a clear commercial dispute with a bit of extortion thrown in, an attempt to protect their news channel, CNN, from being challenged.

Fox does not report on rumours that its owner Rupert Murdoch and his Saudi partner Prince Walid visited Al Jazeera and reportedly were interested in buying the channel, or that Al Jazeera frequently exposed bogus pro-US military propaganda that Fox carried as news during the Iraq War.

Aversion to the truth

You will recall that an Al Jazeera reporter was killed by the US military in Baghdad and their Kabul office was bombed, while one cameraman was held for years in Guantanamo on charges that were never proven. You may remember that George Bush joked about bombing Al Jazeera's headquarters in Doha, a threat that was idiotic since Qatar allowed the Pentagon to base troops and run its Coalition Media Centre there (I covered this story in my film WMD Weapons of Mass Deception and two books, Embedded and When News Lies, 2006).

1. direct,dish,and comcast will carry al jazeera for the next two yrs

all three are locked into the current tv contract . i`ll miss press and miller but al zazeera is an excellent replacement for the tv news here in the usa

6. Nightly one hour broadcasts at 7PM here.

On WGVU-Grand Rapids, MI, Channel 35.3, which runs MHz Worldview 24/7.

International news and public affairs (in English) all day long, through the evening. Then, international drama at night, in the native language with English subtitles.

Lots of different international news broadcasts every day.

My favs (in no order):
NHK - Japan. Very professional with very good cultural content.

France 24

RT: if only for the many obscure bloggers and some conspiracies. Chuckle factor in play.

Taiwan, China, India, Israel are there, all focussing on their specific spheres. For instance, India never doesn't talk about Pakistan; Israel foams at the mouth about Palestine; etc.

All, either informative or entertaining, depending on your point of view.

But, alas, they stopped weekly coverage of the Australian Football League last summer. I will miss Footie. (Go Sydney Swans!)

There's always the Swedish production of Wallander, Maigret from France, Commissario Brunetti from Germany (and filmed in Venice), Montalbano from Italy, and many others. International drama on MHz is great.

Look for it. It's worth a try.

But damn! I miss the Footie!

7. I believe it's already shown on DirectTV on LinkTV

Only a half hour or an hour show, but I've never seen anything controversial or blatantly propagandist, only very interesting news that we are not allowed to see on MSNBC, CNN, or Faux News. Faux News is blatantly propagandist and it's allowed on our airwaves!!

It's the new red herring...used to be Soviets and communists, now its ALL Muslims. Funny that people don't have a problem with Rupert Murdoch buying up our most of our media outlets and of course, they know nothing about Saudi Prince Walid owning part of Fox News-Murdoch Corp.
