(Bloomberg) Chinese television makers, including TCL Corp. (000100) and Hisense Electric Co. (600060), are accelerating their push into the U.S., marketing cut-rate sets and advanced technology as they try to grab share from Japanese and Korean competitors.
The companies are looking to make a splash at the biggest U.S. electronics trade show this week in Las Vegas as they try to raise their visibility with American consumers and distributors. TCL, the Huizhou-based manufacturer of TVs and DVD players, is doubling its space at the event to show off TVs using Google Inc. (GOOG)s Android software, while Qingdao-based Hisense is increasing its exhibition footprint and introducing its first U.S. print and TV ad campaign.
The push will raise pressure on stalwarts like Sony Corp. and Sharp Corp. that are struggling to turn a profit. It will also offer potential benefits for consumers looking for less- expensive sets, even with advanced features like Web connections and apps. Chinas market leaders, such as TCL, offer products that sell for 30 percent less than leading brands.
Its our way of showing the North American market that we are a major player in the world and we intend to be a major player in North America, said JoAnne Foist, the U.S. marketing director for Hisense. ..............(more)

(41,694 posts)2. You're probably already buying a TV made by one of these companies under a different name.
They just put a different name plate on it at the factory, the insides are the same.

Hell at least none of your money will go to suits in corporate offices of US branded stuff built in China now.

(9,893 posts)5. Cheap Chinese products are getting a reputation for poor quality.
If true, that means that they must be replaced frequently, which isn't so cheap in the long run.
My understanding is that Tijuana is a center of television (televisor?) manufacturing in NA. I'd rather see some manufacturing here in the US, but I don't run Sony.

(30,540 posts)6. But will they actually work, half the stuff made in China I get home & it won't work at all. The
other half works for a short while then is dead. I don't need even more crap that ends up in a landfill.
