McConnell:
I wish the president would lead us on the discussion rather than putting himself in the position of having to be dragged kicking and screaming to discuss the single biggest issue facing our future. You know, until we adjust the entitlements so that they meet the demographics of our country, we cant ever solve this problem. The time to solve it is now.

(57,936 posts)Can't be done. Seniors just don't have the savings.
And people now in their 50s are having hard times getting jobs. Normally you save for retirement when you are in your 50s after your children are grown and on their own. That is not the case now in this tough economy.
If they cut Social Security and Medicare, they will end up paying the money they cut out of the general fund anyway in the form of food stamps, etc.
The 1200 average Social Security per month is just enough to keep people above the poverty level. Seniors who have paid their Social Security and saved some above that should not be penalized for having done without during their working years and saved.
That will discourage younger people from saving. Also, it is not right to have low estate taxes on huge estates but require lower middle class seniors to spend down their meager savings and have utterly nothing to leave their children.
Obama will find himself burdened with a hostile Congress if he opposes SS and Medicare cuts.
Young voters vote in the presidential elections. The mid-terms are decided by a somewhat older demographic.
Obama cannot propose SS or Medicare cuts. It would be devastating to older people and especially to older Democratic voters who tend to be lower income seniors.

According to SOME it is pragmatic and sensible.
