In an electoral cycle, is there a time for optimism, and a time for realism?

And might this concept be helpful in reconciling the points of view of those who some consider "cheerleaders", and of those some consider to be "firebagging, hair-on-fire, emo-progs"?

Is there a time in an electoral cycle when a more optimistic (ie, possibly more in the "cheerleading" direction) point of view might be helpful?

And is there a time when a realistic, substantive focus (possibly more in the "firebagging" direction) might be helpful?
