Acknowledging that it underestimated the Obama administration's expectations about its involvement in gun control talks, Walmart said Wednesday company representatives would attend a meeting at The White House on Thursday to discuss firearms.
Walmart initially declined to have a representative attend the White House meeting, citing scheduling conflicts in a statement given to the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.
"Knowing our senior leaders could not be in Washington this week, we spoke in advance with the Vice Presidents office to share our perspective. We underestimated the expectation to attend the meeting on Thursday in person, so we are sending an appropriate representative to participate," Walmart spokesman David Tovar said in a statement released late Wednesday morning. When asked for comment by The Huffington Post, a spokesman referred to the press release and didn't respond to further questions.
Walmart, the nation's largest gun retailer, also for the first time acknowledged publicly that it has been engaged in "ongoing conversations" with the White House and Congress after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December.

(101,700 posts)Sorry, but one doesn't refuse an offical invitation such as this from the WH to work on something of critical national import.
Walmart CORP showed their intense arrogance and were rightfully called on it.
You could have put the period at the end of WH.

(291 posts)Sure they are the single largest retailer of guns, but Id imagine if you added up all the small town, individual/family owned gun stores in America, their sales vastly outnumber walmart.
The walmarts where I live dont even sell guns. However there are about a dozen other places that do.

(10,960 posts)According to the WP article about the Biden group tasked with coming up with recommendations, they want to gain the support of Walmart and other gun retailers with measures that are profitable for those businesses.
(Would Walmart like it if there were no gun shows? Ye$.)

(2,667 posts)When the Walton family has a half a dozen of the richest people on the planet in it you better bet it is the Government that caves to them, and not the other way around. It will remain so as long as we allow private funding of elections and gift giving of any size to those elected,
