White House defends its record of women in leadership positions

A photo of President Barack Obama meeting with his nearly all-male staff – a barely visible Valerie Jarrett being the exception -- to discuss fiscal cliff negotiations prompted questions at Wednesday's White House briefing about the number of high-level women in his administration.

“Two of the three deputy chiefs of staff are women,” Carney said. “The White House counsel is a woman. A woman runs homeland security for this country, Secretary Napolitano.”

He also named Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of Health and Human Services, who he described as the “cabinet secretary in charge of the most important piece of domestic policy legislation in a generation.”

He listed yet more women: Cecilia Munoz , Director of Domestic Policy, Tina Tchen, chief of staff to Michelle Obama, Nancy Hogan, White House personnel director Nancy Hogan.

1. Unlike Republicans, Obama has nothing to prove in terms of

promotion of women and women's issues. But they want to fault him for something.

2. The White House is tone deft on this issue of high level women.

This is 2013. Having the same number of women in the White House as Bill Clinton did is fucking weak.

Some visible, high level women need to be appointed in the next few days or Obama will have created a big problem for democrats. There are plenty of capable women to choose from. I favored Diane Feinstein over Kerry once Rice's potential nomination ran into trouble.
