Sometimes there are other priorities. Regardless of if you think we should be putting the 2% toward social security or not, it was decided that was more important than continuing to put that 2% in your pocket to spend.
As soon as people realize there are things that are more important the sooner we can give up on helping the economy and start to get rid of our debt. Which will of course help the economy in the longer run. But we have to get selfish assholes who only think about wanting now to get over focusing on now.

You did include your go to "selfish asshole," but still did not make much sense.

(10,942 posts)outweigh the present benefits of keeping it. I am not an economist, so I can't argue either way. If the economy continues to improve RB should be right, if not, we are back to a holiday and even worse because republicans could rebound in 2014. Let's pray that RB is right.

(10,960 posts)The only way to actually reduce the debt is to have a steady and briskly growing economy. We do not have that. And we can not cut our way to prosperity.
It's not like this is some untested thing where we ask the man on the street for some "common sense."
These asinine political theater debt reduction stunts will result in the debt being LARGER ten years from now.
The economy is where the money comes from to pay down the debt.
Treating them as independent variables is less than useful. (euphemism)
Also, "it was decided" carries very little intellectual weight, especially when "it was decided" BY REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS.
THE WHITE HOUSE WANTED IT EXTENDED.
So "it was decided" by John Boehner and everyone needs to accept the wisdom of that... because Boehner is the go-to guy on sound governance.
