True, I've posted lots of pictures and notes from my visits to Texas ghost towns on my personal blog, but I've never shared the sounds that one might encounter in a ghost town - until now.
I've interspersed field recordings from one of my forays with music that evokes the feelings I experienced when discovering this town. Click here to listen on Mixcloud - I think you'll enjoy it.
And for you DU newbies out there, be sure to listen to my other mixes!

(7,572 posts)Where is Gilliland? Is that name derived from Welsh/Irish, do you know?

(30,252 posts)It's about 4.5 hours northwest of Dallas if going by car. I know the town was named after a judge, but as for the word's Welsh/Irish origins, that would be the best guess I could come up with.
Glad you liked the music! I hope to do it again sometime soon. One of these days, I would love to set foot in Centralia, PA.

(7,572 posts)My grandmother lived there several years, and my parents were visiting her in the summmer when I was born. I've never been back - too far north. I don't care for the Panhandle part of Texas.

(5,604 posts)Well done. Made me think of 2 things: Texas Chainsaw Massacre and rattlesnakes.

(30,252 posts)I was especially concerned about rattlesnakes - I didn't see or hear any, but at times I was afraid I'd step through a weakened floorboard and find myself knee-deep in a den of angry diamondbacks. The nearest thing to Gilliland resembling a hospital is 20 miles away, too, so no stupid chances this time around.

(36,827 posts)The military built quite a few airports in Texas during WWII (and some during WWI) that were subsequently abandoned after the war. You can still see the outline of the runways from the air for some of them. If you're ever in the Big Bend area, Maverick County airport near Eagles Pass is kinda interesting. The airport is not abandoned, but the old miltary hangars are. Inside the small terminal building they have pictures of the airport and hangers as they were during WWII.
