Right until they get a municipal fine or traffic ticket. Then it's screeching about tyranny and freedom and shit.

I've called them on it too when my friends pull that shit. They sheepishly chuckle.

And I was part of the Occupy movement here in Portland. Think my fear of the government is irrational?

Any insurrection that faced an intact government/military would be, well...fucked. There are certainly plausible scenarios in which the government would no longer control parts of the military - many recent civil wars in other nations have played out like that - and in such situations, I suppose civilian arms might be important. But I don't consider either of those scenarios to be particularly likely here. I do think our nation as currently constituted is probably not going to last all that much longer (as in not beyond my lifetime and I'm in my thirties), but I expect a much less violent dissolution. I certainly hope that's the case...
