When Obama said there are portions of America that "cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." we all cringed a little bit and he quickly said he regretted that choice of words. But we have to be honest, there was nothing wrong with what he said in fact it describes the face of the modern day GOP.
...clinging to a time where white men control all American institutions
... bitter that they will no longer be the majority by 2050 and America will be a diverse nation with members of every group represented in the halls of power
...clinging to a time where gays do not have equal rights as everyone else
... bitter that America wants to treat gays like humans and move forward and give them equal rights
...clinging to their assault rifles and guns
... bitter that American's aren't paranoid gun nuts and don't worship guns like them, but rather care about the security of our children
...clinging to 'religion' as a means to control other peoples lives
...bitter that America doesn't want a book from 2000 years ago controlling the reproductive choices of women or the education of our children
...clinging to their anti-immigrant, xenophobic, rhetoric and action
... bitter that Americans aren't racist like them and believe that those who work hard and are here by no choice of their own should have an opportunity for a good future- to DREAM.
... clinging to a strict interpretation of the 'founders' as a way to hinder progress and substantiate all their antiquated views
... bitter that Americans realize the founders all had different views/interpretations of the law, and that we can't hold our country hostage to old slaveowners from 200 years ago.
Call the modern GOP what they ARE. THEY ARE BITTER CLINGERS. Clinging to an old oppressive worldview they see deteriorating before their eyes. It's happening quickly with the help of the Obama administration, and that's why you see such panic among the crazies. They realize their time of control is coming to an end; they see the tidal wave of demographic changes on the horizon. They have been forced into a survival instinct which makes them lose all sense of reason and rationality. It's too late though, no matter how much they cling or how much hate they fling, the wave is ready to wash over them.

(27,461 posts)he wasn't separating them off from "us", he was empathizing with them and talking about the need for Democrats to reach them.
(and by the way this was also opposite from Romney's comments, where he wrote off the 47%)

(1,385 posts)We need to remember that fear is very important in the lives of the people described. The ground under their feet is shaking and there is no place to run, so they cling desperately to what they know.

(27,617 posts)assume people not supporting him in PA or Ohio were rejecting him because of race &/or why some would not be swayed by arguments about "hope" or "change". Why they would vote against their economic interests. Why they dismissed those arguments because they had heard them before & no one ever delivered. He was empathizing with them and explaining why their POV made sense to them.
