CBS/NYT Poll: 92 Percent Support Background Checks For All Gun Buyers

President Barack Obama's proposal to require background checks for all would-be gun buyers has the backing of the vast majority of Americans, according to a CBS News/New York Times poll released Thursday.

Ninety-two percent of all Americans support universal background checks for gun purchases. The proposal likewise has enormous support across the ideological spectrum, with 93 percent of Democrats and 89 percent of Republicans supporting background checks.

Moreover, 93 percent of those living in households with gun owners and 85 percent in households with members of the National Rifle Association are in favor of background checks.

federally are 2 different things on this issue. States will have to enact laws requiring checks on private sale within their states. The best way to do this IMO is by first enabling NICS to do private sales. This would demand expanding volume capability of NICS and amending the regulations on FFL dealers requiring them to conduct private sale transfers. Most FFLs don't want to do private sale transfers, they would rather sell the gun themselves. There is currently no regulation requiring them to do it and there is no statutory fee they may not exceed, so they simply make it cost prohibitive for private sellers to transfer using NICS...keeping in mind that NICS is available only to FFL dealers and is free for them to access.
