Today, President Obama was sworn in for a second term as President. In that, he shares something with Bill Clinton, and with not so many others. His swearing in marks something that is unique, though:
He is the first black President to win a second term. He was the first black President to ever serve in that office. That is a change I can believe in. It is a sea change in how this country selects its Presidents. It is a change I thought I'd never live to see, to be quite frank. That he won a second term solidifies that change in a way that unalterably changes the United States forever. It is truly remarkable that there is no racial bar to the Presidency, and that there will never be that bar again.
Other changes I can believe in:
We saw the beginnings of the end of second class citizenship for GLBT Americans. More and more states will enact laws that make marriage equality not just an idea that is right, but the law. DOMA will probably disappear within the next year, as well. That's another change I can believe in. Again, it marks the beginning of a new way of looking at each other in this country.
The ACA passed, and will come fully into force in 2014. It isn't enough, but it is a change that marks the beginning of the end of health care only for the well off. In fact, the poor, under ACA, will have increasingly better health care. It's not enough, but it is a change I can believe in.
We are leaving Afghanistan. Yes, there will be some Americans who remain there, but they will not be in combat. A war that started under a Republican President is finally coming to an end. Iraq already has that status. Is it enough? No, but it is a change, and one I can believe in.
The economy is improving. the DJIA will soon overtop its previous high and end the slide that George W. Bush and the Republicans caused. Unemployment is on its way downward. In Minnesota, it recently went down to 5.5%. It's not enough, but it is a change I can believe in. I expect it to improve further over the next four years, and that is a good thing.
We increased the Democratic majority in the Senate, and reduced the size of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. There is an excellent chance of making additional improvements in that balance in 2014. In fact, it's entirely possible that Democrats can regain a majority in both houses of Congress. If we all work very hard, I believe we can make that happen. That's another change I can believe in, and will be working toward.
We're on a road to reduce gun violence. That's an excellent change, but it's not complete yet. We have a distance to go, but there is a new resolve to change that I can believe in. Let's work to make that happen.
There are many other changes, some of them small, and some of them incomplete, that have happened over the past four years. May they continue over the next four, and into the future. I can believe they will happen, too.
I have never expected sweeping, major changes. Our country is too deeply divided, politically, for such an expectation to be realized. I do expect steady, slow change, however. I expect the Obama Presidency to be followed by another Democratic Presidency, and I expect a Democratic congressional majority to be a reality, if not in 2014, then in 2016. That's change I can believe in, and change I will try to help make happen.
Congratulations, Mr. President, on the occasion of your second inauguration. We elected you, which is a huge change, and one we should all believe in. We know you'll do your best to make more change happen. We thank you for that, and will support you in your efforts to make that happen. We believe in that change.

(146,284 posts)As I noted, unemployment is down to 5.5% in Minnesota, and improving elsewhere, too. There is no magical way to fix the job market.

(14,120 posts)When the troops start coming back and leaving the service, what little improvement we have now will dwindle. We as a country need better infrastructure. With those programs at work again, we will have jobs and truly descent roads and bridges again.
MineralMan
(146,284 posts)and I don't think that's possible right now. I think, though, that we need a new initiative, not just a repetition of those depression era ones. Whatever it is, it needs to be targeted toward current needs. Things have changed a great deal since the 1930s.

(14,120 posts)We need to make some noise. The GOP in the House is scared for their jobs right now. We start spreading this idea, get it started in the minds of those that are not a follower of any party. Those that have a way of swinging votes. Then we also get the message to The Powers That Be by writing them, writing papers, using the web, even calling those radio shows just to get this out to be heard.
It is up to "We The People" to make sure we let them know who is in charge. The only way to do that is to make some noise.

(31,849 posts)the go is scared for their jobs; but, unfortunately, the fear is based in their knowledge that their challenge will be coming from someone in their party that is further to the right (and opposed to any WPA/CCC initiative).
Our only hope is that in 2014, the gop primaries produce about 50-odd candidates that can't win in the general election.

(14,120 posts)We need to get this going now. We need the make them remember who is the boss is now. We want to get this message going now, get the message out now.
There are many people that vote Republican right now that can back this because they are builders that are out of work. They are people that have a family they need to clothe and feed, to do this they need work. They will listen to this and they will start making noise on their side.
You know, John Q. Public, those that are not with the parties that will listen. They will start making noise. They are the ones that makes the votes to decide if a Republican or a Democrat gets the offices. Those voices will be heard to, as long as a noise is made.
But a noise must be made now, no waiting and hoping anymore. Make those that want to run on either side look at these ideas. Make then know we want them. Do it now.
No more "Our only hope" bull. We make our own hope. It is We The People that must do it. No wait and see anymore. We must raise our voices now. Make sure that both sides know if you are against it, you are against the people. And that means you will not be voted for. Not even for Dog Catcher!

(45,319 posts)save the rhetorical pass the President took a few months ago when mega donors in the west said 'no checks if you keep up with the bigoted Sanctity bullshit'.
It gets old seeing folks try to wave around change that has not happened, very annoying around tax time, when the straight community's prejudices pick out pockets using unfair tax laws and unequal treatment under the law. The harm being profound and actual, the change must also be complete and actual prior to any celebrations being called by those from the community that could end all of that discrimination in an instant, if that community had the ethics and the will to do so. But they don't, so year after year they indulge in legal discrimination against LGBT people. In most States, we can still be fired, refused employment, evicted or refused housing for being LGBT and those things can be done openly, legally and those things are done openly and legally each day and week that straight folks put on dancing shoes to congratulate themselves on change they have yet to make good upon.
When it is done, it will be great. But it is not done. So put down the Dom until it is done.

(146,284 posts)Also, the dropping of arguments for DOMA by the President at the SCOTUS is a step forward. It's not fixed yet, but it's moving in the right direction.

(16,646 posts)He's defended the men that conspired to commit torture in our names.
He has defended the indefinite detention of people without trial on executive authority alone.
He continues to have a "kill list" of people he will kill without trial.
That's a kind of change I just can't sanction.
the virtues of being a strong leader is to govern with prudence. Nelson Mandela also gave amnesty to leaders of apartheid. This was and still a divided country when President Obama came into office. Just how do you define a trial and a kill list with people or groups that have declared War on you? Especially when you are Commander and chief of the Armed Forces and obligated to carry out the duties of your office given to you by the people and authorized by Congress? I don't know one Commander in Chief that would conduct a War the way you define it throughout the entire history of the World's conflicts,.

(16,646 posts)You do realize this list has included US citizens. How about waging some law enforcment and dump the whole war rehetoric. These aren't people with armies. They barely qualify as gangs. The mafia was larger and better organized and we still fought them in court.

(36,437 posts)That's not "holding somebody's feet to the fire." That's acting like an immature asshole and shitting on other people's celebration. At one level, you just have to shake your head and laugh. At another, you really have to raise your eyebrow at some of these people's maturity and credibility.

Things take time. Especially big changes.
I look forward to what the next four years will be.
