Delinquent Behavior More Likely in Kids Who Prefer Gothic and Punk to Classical, Jazz, and Pop

Delinquent Behavior More Likely in Kids Who Prefer Gothic and Punk to Classical, Jazz, and Pop

Certain types of music can have adverse effects on young minds, researchers say.

In a new study published by the journal Pediatrics, experts say heavy metal, gothic and punk was more likely to cause minor delinquency among minors. The same was found for rhythm and blues, hip-hop, and electronic dance music, such as trance and techno.

On the flip side, pop music, classical and jazz “was not related to or was negatively related to minor delinquency,” the researchers wrote.

The research was conducted in the Netherlands over a period of four years, during which 149 boys and 160 girls—all between the ages of 12 and 16—were studied. The presence and level of delinquency in the adolescents were correlated with their interest in 11 different genres of music.

"Certain types of music can have adverse effects on young minds".

I think it's more likely that kids who are rebellious choose to listen to certain types of music, not the other way round (i.e. the music doesn't cause them to be rebellious).

When you look at it the other way around, it makes sense.

Also, Jazz was a delinquent form of music for a segment of youth in Nazi Germany. I wish I could find an article about this, but I remember going over some of this during one of my Third Reich history classes in college.

It is not as cut and dry as saying ___ music is conformist music and ___ music is non-conformist music.

(BTW there's also a cool BBC radioplay of the novel which you can find on certain torrent download sites - if you trust them - with a full cast and jazz music soundtrack).

Without sounding like an old man.

Gothic/punk/metal is today, what pop and jazz were several generations ago. So today you have kids listening to goth/metal/punk, sitting in a smoke filled basement doing what kids do. Generations ago it was The Grateful Dead, Sex Pistols, Elvis, Miles Davis, Iggy Pop, Ray Charels, etc...

It is a simple metric. If it pissed off your parents, it was good.

I'm sure the same thing happened in the mid 1700's when the kids stopped listening to Bach and Vivaldi and were sneaking out to a beatnick club to listen to Mozart and Beethoven.

A few years ago I read an article how a city cleared their pedestrian zones of rowdy youths: They played classical music. Not loud, just at a low volume so you would always have it at the back of your head. It worked. Young people just don't like hanging out there.

The method is in wide use nowadays, e.g. in London.

Mon Jan 21, 2013, 01:37 PM

Music (and all the arts) are the feedback system of society: they tell us what we need to know about our society. They are not the cause of the behavior that they use. Instead of pulling up dumb sh*t studies like this, we should be saying why is this imagery appealing to us. If we don't like the answer, then we can go to the root of the problem (which is usually how our society treats people).

It is very very important to listen and not censor.
