Jan 2013

I always found it easiest to feel like I was dropping down into them versus trying to reach up into them. That way you have full support underneath from the diaphram, versus trying to sustain and increase your support as your breath is running lower.

I remember my voice teacher, who sang with Tanglewood's inner group, talking about Seiji Ozawa making fun of Kathleen Battle, who kept making an arm motion that reached up and then dropped down when she sang the high notes during rehearsal. I suspect it was for a similar mental image of dropping down into the note.

I don't particularly like what passes as artistry of any of the modern pop divas. But I do think it is patently unfair to compare one singer's live, outdoor performance with another's taped, studio performance.

To my ears, the beginning was too low for her range; it seemed to me she was struggling to reach those lower notes. She should have moved it up so that she could have started it more in her comfort zone. But by the middle it was in her range and from that point on she was terrific. Beyonce was also excellent.

And taped it in a studio ahead of time. All she had to do was pretend she was singing, without worrying about actually hitting notes and being heard.

I don't blame Beyonce for her choice. Outdoors in cold weather is far from ideal for singing. Inhaling cold air has a way of causing bronchial passages to seize up, which would clearly be a singer's worst nightmare come true.

But it is patently unfair to compare the two performances, since only one was live.

Too many here are comparing her taped, studio performance with Clarkson's live, outdoor performance. That is not a fair comparison -- it's apples and oranges.

But my understanding is that it was her choice. She could have sung live against the taped band. From what I read, the band commander said that she chose to use her taped version.

I don't blame her for the choice. Singing outside in cold weather is far from ideal. As I wrote elsewhere, sucking in really cold air can cause airways to seize up.

But it's also unfair to criticize Beyonce. Actually the whole controversy is rather silly.

Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Gregory Wolf said that because there was no opportunity for Beyonce to rehearse with the Marine Band, it was determined that a live performance by the band was ill advised. Instead they used a pre-recorded track for the band's portion of the song.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/22/marine-band-beyonce-lip-sync_n_2529293.html

However, the band and the singer had decided Sunday night to use a precorded music track, since they were unable to coordinate a time for a full rehearsal. "She wasn't comfortable performing without a rehearsal, and I wasn't comfortable that either," he said.

and I specifically didn't criticize and, in fact, defended Beyonce's choice to lip sync.

I had seen the 1st article in which the band decided to use a recording of its portion of the song. The 2nd article looks more like a mutual decision. I also had read an article quoting YoYo Ma's decision to pretend play in an outside performance, due to the difficulty of playing a cello in the cold, which is probably why I had cold weather in my mind as a reason for the choice. As a singer, I understand the challenges. Lack of rehearsal is another very good reason to play it safer.

What a ridiculous post - you obviously are an uninformed fan with no knowledge of Kelly's vocal history. Beyonce, who requires the use of an echo effect to enhance her thin voice, would top out somewhere around an F5. That's being really generous since I think she's only hit that note a couple of times live.

Kelly, on the other hand, consistently hits and sustains G5-A5 notes with out faltering. Her notes are powerful and electric and she has never felt the need to lip synch, EVER.

I will give you the fact that Beyonce, like a dog, is well trained. She's not a gifted vocalist though - she has to rely on smoke and mirrors to disguise the fact that underneath it all she's only marginally talented.

... not getting a break these days because the entertainment machine is actively seeking out performers who 'fit the suit,' pardon my Brady Bunch/Johnny Bravo reference. They want to put together their own boy bands; they want to "discover" just the right singers through shows like American Idol so they can control their exposure to the pop culture consumers. Leave nothing to chance. Kelly Clarkson is a talented singer with an excellent voice who is a product of that assembly line. Go ahead and enjoy listening to her. But understand that all of this leads to the bland sameness of so much of today's new pop music.

Beyonce did a good job on the Star Spangled Banner as well.

However, the groups that sang the national anthem at the football conference championships yesterday were better than both of them.

I've never heard of Zac Brown Band but they did a wonderful job on the anthem at the 49's-Falcons game, playing it straight almost in a barbershop quartet style.

Gloriana (whoever they are) performed at the Patriots-Ravens game and they were damn good as well with a little more adventurous and improvisational version.

It isn't a great song to begin with but it's way worse when singers take liberties with the melody. These groups didn't do that.

But all is forgiven. She voted dem again even though her fiance voted for Rmoney(PUKE)

She killed that song too! Kelly is the greatest singer alive IMHO. I voted my ass off for her waaay back in season one of AI when nobody had even heard of the show yet.

How lucky were they to discover a singer like her, first time out? They should have stopped the show then lol. No one is ever going to top that girl...EVAH!

I loved her rendition of My country tis of thee...it was fricken beautiful! Her voice is so thick and rich, like a chocolate shake and then towards the end she pulls out the power baby..YEAH!

Thats Kelly

She wasn't perfect, but it's about the heart. She was obviously nervous and it showed, but she nailed after the first couple of verses. I'll take real over pretend any day!

was also moved by the song. Her rendition was more emotional than pitch perfect.

but I thought all the music was wonderful...all of it had a modern tone vs most others had boring, corny patriotic... I loved watching Schumer enjoy being MC...he seemed so proud after every performance since he was part of putting the show together.

I thought that she did great and I have more respect for her then I do Beyonce.

102. Kelly was whiny, nasal and slid into her notes too much.

Like a typical bad shitkick singer.

Beyonce was much better.

This is one of the reasons I hate country music. There are several more.

I'll put my musical training up against any other critics here any day of the week.
