My son Bran is in the Job Corp program at Tongue Point, Astoria. Our conversation a few days ago revolved around the cuts they are seeing all around them. The food has gone downhill, their pay has been held up, and his entry into the Welding program is being delayed because they've cut the number of slots available.
I did a little googling and found out just how extensive these cuts are. Republicans are once again sucking the life force out of an excellent program.
One of the oldest social programs in the federal government today, the Job Corps tries to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds complete their high school education and get a good start in the working world. The program has trained and educated two million individuals since it was first established during the Great Society era of the 1960s. Job Corps participants receive not only job assistance and education, but also room and board during their time in the program, which can last up to two years. In spite of its altruistic mission, the Job Corps has long been a source of debate between liberals and conservatives over the programs continuation and funding.

The government is trying to cut funding to Job Corps and other Programs. Job corps is a program that educates and trains people between the ages of 16 and 24 to enter the workforce. In this crucial time when we already face high unemployment rates WHY would any country think cutting our younger populations options for becoming productive hardworking TAX PAYING citizens is a good idea?

(13,877 posts)Have noticed this trend and how it, perhaps unintentionally, unequally affects the Red/Rural/Small Town America areas. It is definitely significant in our long-term cultural evolution. Funding for the military proceeds thus far, pretty much unabated. Funding for jobs bills...including veterans job bills...not so much.
One of those "untouchable" issues, at least by a first term Liberal president. (Shameful Sarcasm...Perhaps we could send Michelle over to The Other House and give John Boehner a gentle tap on the arm...perhaps an elbow in the side...and help 'splain it to him.)
The NYC...Neighborhood Youth Corps during high school 1965-66...I experienced first hand and it was a vital hand-up for my future.
