A couple of aides to Gov. Scott Walker during his time as county executive will soon be charged by Milwaukee County prosecutors with doing illegal political activity while being paid by taxpayers to do county jobs.

That is already public.

But here's a new twist.

The higher-ranking of the two ex-aides will be accused of using county time and resources to work on a statewide campaign unrelated to Walker's 2010 gubernatorial bid, sources said. Walker defeated Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett in November 2010.

Those sources would not identify the name of the staffer or the statewide campaign the individual assisted. But investigators came across the political work, multiple sources said, after seizing the former staffer's work and personal computers.
