via truthdig:
A Catholic health provider has abandoned its beliefs by arguing that a dead fetus and a dead person are not the same thing in order to win a malpractice lawsuit.
The case stems from the death of 31-year-old Lori Stodghill, who was pregnant with twins when she died of a heart attack in 2006. The womans husband, Jeremy, filed a wrongful death suit against the faith-based, nonprofit hospital chain Catholic Health Initiatives, alleging its decision not to perform a perimortem cesarean section led to the deaths of the twins.
The health provider was able to win that lawsuit by arguingagainst its own religious doctrinethat a fetus is not a person. The hospital chains strategy demonstrates that, in the end, greed and money ultimately triumph over principles and beliefs. ........................(more)

& still be Catholic.
It admits the truth of their position: If there is such a thing as a "Just War" in which innocents die, then a woman's choice is a matter of conscience, not Catholic dogma. That's an improvement over trying to pretend that everyone is not called upon to make these judgement calls and whether they manage to do so honestly or not, whether each of us gets it right or wrong, should not be subsumed behind "dogma".

(111,237 posts)The twins were viable. Likely both would have survived had they been on the ball and delivered them quickly.

(8,392 posts)... I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, yes, the hospital's hypocrisy is appalling. On the other hand, there's the father, whom the obstetrician asked whether he wanted them to take the babies, whose only response was, "I'm not a doctor." I think a lawsuit under such circumstances is highly suspect in any case.
