Another Free Trade disaster -- imported fish that can put you in the hospital.

Also, the World Trade Orginization has ruled our country of origin laws are illegal and have to be eliminated. The WTO is nothing more than a bunch of corporate lawyers protecting the corporations and their rich investors at the expense of the people. The next time you go out to eat seafood, think about this.......

http://economyincrisis.org/content/we-are-importing-more-unchecked-potentially-toxic-seafood-than-ever-before

<snip>
This is a very real threat to the health of every American. A recent Center for Disease Control study found that 44 percent of the foodborne illnesses studied were the result of imported food, with seafood being the culprit more often than any other variety of food.

This is no surprise given where some of this seafood comes from. In China, tilapia are raised in fish farms where they are fed pig manure, known to contain salmonella and other illness-inducing bacteria.

In Vietnam, shrimp being exported to the United States were found encased in ice made from water filled with harmful bacteria. The Vietnamese shrimp exporter, Soc Trang Seafood Joint Stock Company, also had three shipments rejected by Japan in 2012 because banned chemicals were detected. The U.S. frequently accepts shipments from this same company.

Most of the shrimp we eat in the United States comes from Thailand. A 2012 FDA study found that shrimp from Thailand had become resistant to several antibiotics, making them “a reservoir for multidrug-resistant Klebsiella,” a bacteria which can trigger meningitis and pneumonia in humans.

Alabama is one of the few states that properly inspects their seafood, and they reject over 50 percent of imported fish due to safety concerns. Why can’t the federal government do as well as Alabama?

so unless the restaurant KNOWS where it was fished from, you could be eating this stuff... what about frozen 'gortons' type stuff?

Between swai and catfish or grouper or snapper. Restaurants or grocers or mongers who claim they were fooled by suppliers are full of it.

Imported "catfish" from China is another big issue down here, since Southern catfish is rather famous.
Sadly, "local" shrimp comes from the Gulf, and there are major problems because of BP, still.
So, sadly, I had my last shrimp just before the spill.

it's labled "product of Canada,"meaning it's raised there? Checked some salmon and shrimp, no clue where they came from. Maybe we'll start ice fishing again...

where it comes from. And I won't eat any from Asia or the Gulf of Mexico.

We've pretty much given it up.

and do so to the benefit of the multi-national corporations and to the detriment of most life on Earth, including almost all the people.

What we have here is a planetary scale pig in a poke.
