Hogan Prep Charter School student is caught with gun, bullets at school
Jackson County juvenile authorities charged a 14-year-old boy with unlawful use of a weapon after he allegedly brought a handgun to school in his backpack Thursday.
Kansas City police arrested the boy after the 8:30 a.m. incident at Hogan Preparatory Middle School, 5809 Michigan Ave. Police confiscated the gun, which belonged to his grandfather.
The boy allegedly showed the 9 mm handgun to other students, who reported it to the assistant principal.
According to a police report, the boy was removed from class and taken to a secure room, where the assistant principal asked if she could look inside his backpack. He refused and moved the backpack behind him, in an apparent attempt to conceal it. The administrator called police.
Officers took the backpack and found a semiautomatic Glock 19 unloaded inside the large pocket. Inside the same pocket, police found a magazine loaded with 13 rounds, the report said.
The boy told police his grandfather didnt know he took the gun. He said he brought it to school because he had been having problems with another boy at school. After their last altercation, the other boy reportedly said he and his friends would bring their guns next time. The boy said he then began carrying the gun for protection.
Police asked the other boy if they could search him and his backpack. He agreed and police found no weapon.
