If you dont speak German or live in Germany, then likely you dont know what happened today. All Hell broke loose re:sexism in Germany media and society. A journalist came out with a story about her experience with a politician during a gathering after a meeting. The politician stared at her breasts and then told her than she fills out her dress very well. Then he took her hand and asked her to dance. She told him that she is a journalist and would prefer to keep their work together professional. To this, he told her that politicians often fall for journalists.
After publishing her story, the mainstream media picked up on it and a general discussion about sexism in Germany broke out. The story prompted widespread discussion about sexism in German society at large, extending the topic from this example into a broader conversation and debate about patriarchy, sexism, and misogyny in all facets of German life and cultureat in the world at large.
This comes at a good time, considering the One Billion Rising global protest set to take place in just 2 weeks on February 14th, which itself is able to pick up on the momentum initiated after the brutal rape and murder of a woman in India. In Germany, the Feminist Party is in the process of circulating a petition as part of a campaign to impose stricter laws regarding sexism within the German media.
May this be our year, all of us.
