Gingrich Asked About Marital Past, Role In Clinton Impeachment
By MATTHEW JAFFE & ELICIA DOVER -
MIAMI Newt Gingrich today was forced to confront head-on charges of hypocrisy after last week he angrily dismissed questions about his extra-marital conduct when a little over a decade earlier, as Speaker of the House, he had led impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton for his own affair.
When you were Speaker of the House, you criticized President Clinton for having an extramarital affair, Univision correspondent Jorge Ramos said to Gingrich during a forum Wednesday in Miami.
. . . . . . . . .
However at the same time you were doing exactly the same thing.

Thats right, because they listen to your question and they dont understand the facts. The fact is, I have been through two divorces, said the GOP candidate. I have been deposed both times under oath and both times I have told the truth in the deposition because I know I am not a lawyer so I know it is a felony. Bill Clinton, who is a lawyer, a Yale law school graduate, he knew he was lying under oath, he knew it was perjury, he knew it was a felony and in fact, he lost his license to practice law in Arkansas as part of the deal -

Okay, there is some place there where theres a mental synapse missing, said an aggravated Gingrich. I didnt do the same thing. I never lied under oath, I have never committed perjury, I have never been involved in a felony he was. I mean, I had one of his closest friends come to see me and said to m, You know, lots of people have done what he did and I said, Thats right but they didnt lie under oath about it. And the guy looked at me and said well, youre right, thats a felony and thats a real problem.

(37,540 posts)No doubt, Clinton fudged facts about a consensual act with another adult. So what? Why was this 50+MM witch hunt even allowed to be conducted? This had no bearing whatsoever on Clinton's fitness to run this country. It's not like he was the 1st President to have an affair with someone other than his spouse while in office. The fact that a partisan witch hunt was conducted by Gingrich while he was doing, at best, the same thing is the hight of cynical hypocrisy. Newt's going to have to come up with a better lie than it was the "lying under oath" BS.

(62,325 posts)that this rightwing lie has been debunked many, many times.
Clinton's 'lie' was told in a deposition for a case that was dismissed on its merits. So, no perjury, no felony. To commit perjury someone has to lie about something that is 'material to the case'. Since there was no case, nothing he said in the deposition was 'material'.
To think this country has sunk so low that this is what the Corporations are able to buy to run for president of the US.
I hope someone corrects him in the media, but then why would they? They have gone along with the rightwing lies for decades now.
