A significant percentage of children in the United States are unequipped to succeed in this country, according to statistics from the Childrens Defense Fund (CDF). A staggering 21.9% of our nations children are living in poverty. The CDF data shows that children are the poorest age group and that the younger they are, the poorer.

If the foundation of your house is crumbling, you dont say you cant afford to fix it, said {CDF founder Marian Wright} Edelman, dissatisfied with the way child poverty has been addressed in this country. Its disgraceful that we let children be the poorest group of Americans.
Part of Edelmans discontent stems from her belief that we already know how to fix the disparity. She identified changes in employment opportunities, wages increases, and tax incentives as a few of the items to be adjusted in order to create a better outlook for the impoverished children. Weve got to close the gap between what we know and what we do, she said. Unfortunately, lawmakers have the deficit holding them back, cutting costs and inadvertently stunting the progress.
Be Careful What You Cut is a new CDF campaign that is bringing awareness to the fact that some of the major social welfare funding is being reduced at the expense of children. Early education investments, nutritional programs, and tax credits are major contributors to child welfare, and shrinking funding in these areas can have negative effects on a poor child already trying to survive against the odds.

(32,139 posts)that this is the direction we get, even from Democrats, despite a landslide and despite a clear message from Americans across party lines that austerity is the last thing we need.
So many are already desperately suffering.
This is the outcome of allowing corporate money to corrupt our political process.

(6,234 posts)I'm pretty sure that's how it works in the modern Democratic party. Basically, we just do whatever the GOP proposed five or ten years ago and we declare victory.
...and remember when they cut food stamps and welfare, which giving families a pittance to survive...
....that they cannot be bothered to audit the Pentagon and Homeland Security because spending
it is too out of control and unaccountable.
Don't ask why or what the fuck!!....even though it is 60% of government spending.

...it's not the law. President Obama did what other Presidents have tried and failed to do for more than a century.
The health care law is still the biggest expansion of the safety net since Medicare

(4,695 posts)while at the back of the classroom, teachers hand out notebook paper as poorer children are out (of most school supplies) by the Third Six Weeks grading period.
There is a need for pens and pencils too.

This is our future, getting screwed over here....American needs to wake up fast.
The only thing that seems to work for motivating people is selfishness....
If our children continue to get screwed over and dumbed down....
just imagine what your future nurses when you are old and sick will look like!
It is very difficult to learn when you are starving and don't know where you will sleep that night.

"It takes money to make money" in a financialized economy. That leaves an awful lot of people SOL.
