Former Eddy County Commissioner Roxanne Lara is pushing an online petition calling for the resignation of State Rep. Cathrynn Brown, R-Carlsbad, in response to Brown's legislation calling for felony charges for abortions related to rape and incest.

Brown's House Bill 206 has been the subject of controversy since it was introduced earlier this week, but she's not backing down on it. The original legislation stated that anyone involved in an abortion after rape or incest must be prosecuted for the crime of tampering with evidence. Brown revised the bill Friday to ensure pregnant women wouldn't be charged as a result of her bill.

Besides calling for Brown's resignation, Lara's petition, which had 87 signatures as of 8 p.m. Friday night, demands the second-term legislator withdraw the bill, as well as an explanation from legislators regarding their actions in amending the bill.

Lara, who is a candidate for the New Mexico Democratic State Party Chair, said she takes the bill personally because she is an advocate for women's issues.

Brown is too profoundly ignorant to be in the state lege, too ignorant to know that the clinic can turn over the post abortion detritus for testing.

She'd rather a nine year old child's body be torn apart by childbirth than risk that pore baybee her rapist forced on her.

But, I am in favor of anything giving her more visibility. This is good for a news cycle. The people of the state should keep Cathryn Brown in the news as much as possible. If she goes to a cafe they should say Cathryn Brown the sponsor of the bill to force a child to carry a rape baby, sits down for a relaxing cup of java.

5. I think there has been alot of misunderstanding with this bill. Mainly because it was poorly

written. I've followed it since the beginning. It seems that after the story ran Brown came out and explained the purpose of the bill. It was to stop a rapist from coercing or forcing a woman to have an abortion to hide the evidence. While she didn't say it, one poster on a website said that's common in incest. If the girl carries the baby to term, it is always proof of the incest. That is why she amended it to remove the woman who was raped from being prosecuted. While yes, they could test the fluid from an abortion if there was a complaint beforehand, I guess some are pressured to get an abortion. Since it appears the girl/woman would be protected, i'm wondering how bad this is. Now, it would have to be investigated to make sure no one could use this as a way to disrupt abortion practices or deny service. I'll hold off on judgement until I see the final analysis of the bill. She'll likely lose her seat to a dem next election anyway.
