Peace and Justice of La Luz members and their supporters celebrated the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade at Tenth Street and White Sands Boulevard Saturday.
Roe v. Wade is a 1973 landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that upheld a woman's right to get an abortion during the first trimester of a pregnancy.

Peace and Justice of La Luz spokeswoman Denise Lang said she wants people to know that Roe v. Wade is about a woman's right to choose to have an abortion.

"It's about trusting women to make the choice and letting women make the choice," Lang said. "Right here in New Mexico, it's been under attack. It was the most bizarre piece of legislation that somebody's tried to put through the legislature. I think state Rep. Cathrynn Brown has backed off of it. To me, it's the most bizarre piece of legislation that I have seen."

She said she believes it's legislation like Brown's that makes us stand up and "protect a woman's right to choose..."

The Tea Party Second Amendment group planned a rally at the same intersection, same time, but we had our permit turned in Jan 2, spoke with the police and city clerk AND the Tea Party folks. Fortunately, they cancelled. I would have advised the group to cancel just to preserve safety and am glad we didn't have to.
And two of our local state reps had signed onto the bill that would have arrested women pregnant by rape if they had pursued an abortion. I live in a very fundamentalist, super conservative county. I'm going to try to figure out how to post pics.
