Responding to a report indicating that President Obama will call for same-sex couples to be covered in immigration reform, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Tuesday said the issue is "not of paramount importance at this time." The Senate's recently unveiled reform plan does not address same-sex couples' immigration issues.
"Well have to look at it," McCain said on "CBS This Morning." "Well have to gauge how the majority of Congress feels. But that, to me, is a red flag that, frankly, we will address in time. We need to get broad consensus over on our proposal to start with. And there are a number of very difficult issues we have to resolve. And as the critics said, we have to go to the floor of the Senate, we have to debate, we have to amend, and we look forward to working with both Republicans and Democrats on both sides of the aisle and the President."
BuzzFeed reported late Monday that Obama will include same-sex couples in his immigration reform plan, which he is scheduled to announce during a speech in Las Vegas, Nev., Tuesday.

(153 posts)I really love the way these elected representatives (or in this case a Senator) believe that not enough people have suffered enough to warrant a change in policy. Why no - we must expect MORE American citizens to suffer because some senators aren't ready to stop dragging their damned feet over a policy which is clearly un-American.
A lot of the defense to this abhorrent discrimination against same-sex couples is rooted in the outrageous Defense of Marriage Act, a piece of legislation which was clearly unconstitutional - and the rabidly reactionary Congress KNEW that - when it was passed. It just amazes me how these "leaders" so willingly circumvent the Constitution whenever they want to find ways to continue making some American citizens second-class - and then how they'll stall for decades to correct that mistake. Real lives are harmed by these policies.
Maybe someone needs to suggest to Senator McCain that it is past time for Congress to declare whether gay Americans are really citizens or not - and then explain it in constitutional terms.

(59,503 posts)There are several states where gay marriage exists. Some of the marriages will be between Americans and non Americans. It is a very easy argument that it is discriminatory to not treat a gay couple married in say, MA, the same as a heterosexual couple.

(3,526 posts)....for GOPers to support immigration reform was to improve the GOP's chances in future elections. And today? Well, let's just be charitable and say McCain continues to show his true rotting colors on a variety of issues.
