Wish I could observe them in my back yard. I've only had Mallards and Canada geese.
A Mallard had 13 babies and I got to watch them learn new skills and grow up and a couple die. Then one day they swam down the stream and never returned.

... when DU's share photos with us. Thank you ...

Was a 'birder' for years.

Yesterday I watched here on DU for many minutes a live video cam of a hummingbird thinking about leaving the nest.

It helps me to not think about the many awful/sad things going on.

I was glad to see them and happy to share. I didn't work today so I got the opportunity to see them and it brightened my day too.

They don't know yet if we'll see them this year. They're building a new nest and don't know which one they will use this year...no camera on the new nest so we're all hoping they will use the old nest one more time...got fingers crossed...should know in a couple weeks when the mom lays her eggs. Check it out on Facebook.

I watched the Humming bird video too.

but things are looking up for us. Unfortunately though, quite a few houses in the hood are still uninhabited and some are uninhabitable.

i hate to complain... you are right i have a great back yard... especially in the summer when it extends to the bay and ocean

but during Sandy the water was over the tops of the fences in the pics... about 9 feet above mean high tide... pics are close to low tide

bring on the good weather

Just a lil advice: if you do want to take a picture of a bird flying off, try a higher shutter speed. The only down-side is you need more light.

Learned how to take good pics. I need to get a new, digital camera, since my old one took only film.

to get out of the downpour. I have a clothesline under my back patio roof and I look out and there he was perched on it. Preening his feathers and sharrpening his long skinny beak on the clothesline. Very cute. He looked like he was in a trance part of the time, maybe trying to get his bearings as he moved his head from side to side.
