http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/gun-control-agenda-launching-white-paranoid-extremists-prepare-armed-revolutionThe battle over gun control has exposed a truth the mainstream media is apparently too shy to mention: A bunch of far-right, white, mostly Southern, paranoid extremists are preparing for armed revolution and apocalypse. They speak treason: literally.
They are preparing to "defend" America from America with arsenals of weapons and stockpiles of ammunition. Their "enemy" is everyone in America not like them.
They think the world is ending and/or that the government is out to get them. That doesnt mean it will happen. But expect violence and assassinations. Their ideology is made up of equal parts racism, evangelical Christian fascination with the end times, hatred of President Obama, resentment of the Old South variety and a Fox News/Glenn Beck/Rush Limbaugh version of world history.
As the New Yorker noted:
Every demographic and political trend that helped to reëlect Barack Obama runs counter to the [Souths] self-definition: The Solid South speaks less and less for America and more and more for itself alone Solidity has always been the Souths strength, and its weakness. The same Southern lock that once held the Democratic Party now divides the Republican Party from the socially liberal, fiscally moderate tendencies of the rest of America The Souths vicesviolence, intolerance, aversion and suspicion toward new ideasgrow particularly acute during periods when it is marginalized and left behind. An estrangement between the South and the rest of the country would bring out the worst in bothdangerous insularity in the first, smug self-deception in the second.

(32,635 posts)Every once in a while I'll get one of those old guys (in their 70s) talking about a revolution. I tell them this is what I heard, "they" have a list of NRA members and are setting up a computer program for unmanned drones to take them out with hell fire missiles when the war starts. They tend to believe it.

(2,730 posts)we do not know what is really driving their paranoia when they talk about these imaginary criminals. The criminals want get background checks for guns. Think about the old antebellum South and slave rebellions. There was paranoia then too. They got to have enough fire power. They fire power to secede too. They need stealth fighters and nukes. We have our extremists too. Some think these people are normal but I'll be more worried about the mental conditions. Think about it. Timothy McVeigh was more likely to commit mass murder but some thought he was normal. His thinking was more like Wayne La pierre because he saw the U.S. government as the enemy. And if you are considered a Communist Leftie by the Right wing nuts why should you trust them? If anyone is dangerous its the Republican right wing. The same nuts they want to steal elections and see fraud in every state they lose.

(86 posts)Going against our goverment worked sooo well for David Koresh!
I think that they should all revolt!
It worked out so well for them during the civil war. And, at that time the government didn't have drones, tanks, F-16s or smart missles.
Um. I'm not thinking this'll be an issue given the calbre of the 'great white pasty defenders of liberty'.

(1,301 posts)Those vices, "violence, intolerance, aversion and suspicion toward new ideas," which stem from a perenially parochial attitude, are the means by which the South marginalizes itself.
Older folks are the exemplar of Southern perspectives and attitudes, so change comes very slowly to the region, and only with the passing of preceding generations. Fear has been the underlying source of these perspectives and attitudes for numerous generations, ultimately originating in a time when white citizens were outnumbered by resentful black slaves. The old saw, often repeated in the South, that racism is a relic of the past, is nothing more than whistling past the graveyard.
This is the reason that people cling to their guns against apocalyptic visions, and a reluctance to embrace the uncertainty of change is why this dynamic between the South and the other regions of the United States will continue to persist, perhaps indefinitely.
It is also why some of us have had to leave.

(20,219 posts)Good analysis.
I'm on the east coast but for nine years I was with a guy from Louisianna. We visited as often as possible.
It was so different...

(29,381 posts)and it's history is what you are talking about here... present day, Southie is not the town it used to be. Bad example.
I'm sure the whole south isn't like what was stated above. I have a hard time believing in generalities. I lived a short period in part of the south and met lots of decent folks who do not identify with the post above.

(24,853 posts)This story uses an anti-gun control headline as an excuse to spew anti-South bigotry and is simply an exercise in fear mongering.

(1,837 posts)it is not paranoia to say that the rightwing gun-nuts are unhinged and fantasizing about civil war 2. you don't have to believe alternet. go ask them at stormfront. or the blaze.

(11,804 posts)Sometimes I think Red Dawn will go down as one of the most destructive movies ever made - along with the Triumph of the Will or Birth of a Nation. Many Conservatives and more than a handful of Liberals fantasize about they day they get to wage guerrilla warfare against the encroaching hordes.

(172 posts)I don't buy the hype that the threat to America comes from common folk.
There are many many legitimately pissed off people in the USA that have seen their jobs go offshore as a result of decades of corrupt incompetent government policy that has been formulated not to benefit Americans, but to benefit rich Wall St bankers and CEOs.
For at least 40 years the elites we pay and elect have been making deals to sell out the good paying USA manufacturing jobs to other countries. Now they wonder why we dont have a solid economy and tax revenue to support what was promised to Americans, before we were sold out. But the Wall St bankers and global Chinese-American corporations have done just fine. We had to bail out their sorry ass due to their greed and incompetence. The capital we gave them they are now using to buy up public assets from distressed Americans and local governments.
I can fully empathize why the AMERICAN people N/E/S/W are pissed off. I can also see why certain elements of society wish to keep us common folk divided and fighting about issues while they continue to plunder us. Americans need to open their eyes that decisions are being made by some that are not in the interest of 99% of the American people. The threat doesn't come from those brothers and sisters that represent average America, it comes from the corrupt boundless greed of those that control our politicians.

(5,436 posts)On a micro scale, the threat is indeed from the scared Delicate Flowers, who help in the massacre & slaughter of Americans by gun nuts.
On a macro scale, those nuts don't make a bit of difference to the functioning of Corporate America. The macro scale is where the Wall Street psychopaths are the threat.

(172 posts)The micro is how they divide us. Their mission has always been to piss off the little people and our American family, as diverse as it is, at each other, while they connive to push us into wars and plunder us.
