from Detroit radio interview with Paul W. Smith on WJR-AM (760) today: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20120127/POLITICS01/201270413/Obama-tackles-college-costs-autos-local-radio-interview?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|s
"The problem is that anytime we do a pipeline from another country into ours, we have to make sure it's done safely," Obama said. "This has to do with developing Canadian resources that would be shipped to the Gulf Coast for processing and then shipped around the world.
"I'd rather we concentrate on U.S. energy
developing American oil and gas instead."

(85,984 posts). . . his energy plan is focused on reducing imports, so it would follow that he's not proposing all of this to just export the resources.

Obama also said investing in renewable energy like wind and solar power - instead of subsidizing the oil sector - would help reduce America's dependence on exports to fuel its cars, trucks and factories.
"Even if we tapped every drop of domestic oil, we've only got 2 percent of the world's oil reserves. We've got to have an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy, develop every available source of American energy."

(50,232 posts)Canada and the multinational oil companies profit from the XL pipeline and the dirty tar sands oil while the U.S. states where the pipeline is slated to run through have the very real environmental risk and all so the dirty oil can be refined and then shipped to China and other countries.
I hope the pipeline proposal is dead, dead, dead.
