(36,988 posts)Army units found three meteorite debris impact sites, two of which are in an area near Chebarkul Lake, west of Chelyabinsk. The third site was found some 80 kilometers further to the northwest, near the town of Zlatoust. One of the fragments that struck near Chebarkul left a crater six meters in diameter.

(44,228 posts)Really depends on the material composition of the meteorite. If its mostly ice, then the trail might be like a condensation trail, as the ice flashes to steam, then condenses back to water vapour.
But if the meteorite is rock and minerals, they're burning off in the extreme heat caused by friction, leaving a trail of a mess of chemical particulate, ash and smoke.
But you can't see this 'cause you're ignoring me (glad you brought it back )

(12,530 posts)Emm-trail-Kay sensors placed throughout the website's forums confirmed that the notorious conspiracy theorist Dithers did in fact advocate for That Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken. Denizens of the site eagerly await the outcome of The Ban Hammer Council, who will release a plume of smoke to signify that they've come to a decision. Dithers spends his days waiting in a Meta holding cell, scratching the words to God Save the Queen alongside the graffiti left by previous occupants of the cell.

(55,745 posts)I saw something similar, camping in northern Michigan with a dozen high school chums in summer of '78.
Exhausted and blitzed after a day's canoeing, eating and partying, we all were laying on top of our sleeping bags, under the cloudless, black, starry sky, telling jokes and lies and all the stuff old pals say out loud.
All at once, the sky itself seemed to brighten and a meteor streaked across the sky, leaving a cloudy contrail that seemed to glow for a minute afterwards. It seemed to also have made a sizzling sound. This was followed by a loud boom.
We all were amazed. I'm still amazed, thinking about that thing.

(8,554 posts)18:40 GMT: The search for the meteorite parts at Chebarkul Lake and at other two locations has officially been stopped. The huge ice hole found at the lake on Friday has formed because of a different reason, the Vice-Governor of Chelyabinsk region Igor Murog told Interfax-Ural.
I guess they sent divers down and found a bunch of ooze but nothing solid, tho that part of the article implies that those divers simply gave up due to visibility problems. This more recent update sounds like they've learned something more about the hole in the ice.
Cue the Blob music...

(3,020 posts)Russian space agency Roskosmos has confirmed the object that crashed in the Chelyabinsk region is a meteorite:
According to preliminary estimates, this space object is of non-technogenic origin and qualifies as a meteorite. It was moving at a low trajectory with a speed of about 30 km/s.
