A highly influential conservative leader is already considering an impeachment strategy against President Obama if he wins re-election.
Grover Norquist of Americans For Tax Reform told National Journal that if Obama is re-elected and refuses to re-authorize the Bush-era tax cuts for millionaires, Obama can sit there and let all the tax [cuts] lapse, and then the Republicans will have enough votes in the Senate in 2014 to impeach.
Norquist is infamous for his anti-tax pledge, which has been signed by most Republicans and a few Democrats, which forces them to oppose any and all tax increases or face a primary opponent funded by Norquist and his shadowy multi-millionaire donors.
In an interview with Bill Moyers on PBS, Norquist professed his desire to shrink the government down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.

(21,946 posts)2. that the republicans will take the Senate.
3. that not renewing the tax cuts for the rich is an appeachable offense.
4. that his own strangle-hold on the House is not treason..working against the government.
5. that anyone finds him influencial anymore now that they know what he's doing.

(3,427 posts)The Senate doesn't impeach, the House does. They already have enough votes to impeach the President if they want to. But they need a two-thirds majority in the Senate to convict, and they certainly won't have that any time soon.

(19,288 posts)For god's sake, don't they need a reason?
Do they just want to hamstring him for months like they did with Clinton? Cost millions of tax payer dollars to put on that Lewinski charade.
And I heard Newt bragging about the surplus and tax cuts that came about while he was speaker. How is that for a hypocrite. Obstructionist bitchard.

(19,537 posts)... like they've done the last term. If they don't do an impeachment and they are in a majority in the House still, and just obstruct everything and don't get anything out to help a nation that needs help, they are setting themselves up for perhaps an even bigger overhaul than they faced in 2008. Perhaps they think they can get people distracted enough with their hate for Obama through doing an impeachment then, even if it is destined to fail, much like they did with Clinton.

Does he realise what would happen if they tried that considering what bush and his cronies did during their regime and he wasn't impeached..This man is delusional...big time!

(8,962 posts)For starters:
Q: Does Grover Norquist hold any elective office? A: No
Q: Is Norquist a lobbyist representing monied interests? A: Yes
Q: Does Norquist consider members of Congress to be more accountable to him than to their constituents? A: Yes
Q: Is there a high crime or misdemeanor involved in allowing a temporary tax policy to expire? A: No
Q: Are Republicans inclined to overplay their hand? A: Yes
Q: Might they ask Newt Gingrich how well this tactic worked out for him back in the day? A: That's their call

(32,074 posts)And, that's due in good part to the fact that the only thing they're doing is obstructing the President.
A: Apparently not. More likely, he is delusional enough to think it doesn't matter.

(32,074 posts)You know...the thing about repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting the outcome to be different. Apparently, they didn't learn from the Clinton impeachment, and this time they have even less on this President. And, as I recall, Clinton's approval ratings went up by a large percentage AFTER the impeachment. I don't think the country is in the mood to be dragged through that bullshit once again.

(19,089 posts)The more influence Norquist exerts, the less likely the GOP will be in a position to impeach anyone ...
He posits that the GOP will win in 2014 ... Yet Clinton (and the nation) went on to enjoy eight years of healthy prosperity after he raised taxes on the rich ..... Gingrich was one of those who in 1993 SWORE up and down the economy would sink .....
The rest is history ..... The GOP wont be in a position to impeach the janitors ...

(26,355 posts)In fact, I'd say Obama's presidency has been remarkably scandal-free.
No stained dresses, no freezers full of cash. What lame-ass excuse would they have to get a majority of the House and 2/3 of the Senate to vote to throw him out?

GoCubsGo
(32,074 posts)They are not just stupid. They are crazy stupid. They are so blinded by their hatred for the current President, they'll try just about ANYTHING to get rid of him, and the thought of him winning a second term has driven them off the deep end. They are not rational, so they are not going to behave rationally.
The problem for the repugs is, the way things are going now, there's a decent chance they're going to lose the House. Then they won't even have the chance to impeach him. Norquist is spewing this shit because he fears just that. He's riling up the base. There is no enthusiasm for Romney, and the more of them that stay home in November, the fewer of them there will be to vote for repug candidates in other races. He's trying to give them some incentive to show up at the polls in November.

(30,673 posts)except they are always poor losers and have tried everytrick in the cheater's book, including specious impeachment charges that cost the taxpayers millions, to make up for their dwindling numbers against the Dems.
But what are they going to impeach him about? Oh, yeah, he's thinking about taking away the shady loopholes which allowed the rich to get obscenely wealthy. That will be a popular program, I'm sure.
