Concern over the human rights situation in USA

We note with concern the increasingly acrimonious situation for human rights activists and protesters inthe United States.

This is expressed mainly through the new legislation and the crackdown on peaceful protests across the country.

Isolated, this is not a danger, but in a global perspective it is important to remember the U.S. is a model for democracy and human rights. At least it tries to be. There is no doubt that America's handling of protesters set a precedent for other nations, especially for countries where violence against protesters is a common event. It has even been claimed, though not proven, that the use of tear gas against demonstrators me fatal outcome in Egypt December 2011, was justified as a direct result of the use of pepper spray on peaceful protesters in the United States.

That being said, we can, to some extent agree that freedom of speech not usually include camping in New York. Still, that form of protest should be tolerated in a modern state. We believe the situation should have been handled differently. When it comes to the more serious cases, USA recently passed a law (NDAA) allowing "indefiniteDetention without trial" of people that threaten US interests.

Something meaning, worst case scenario, that ordinary peaceful protesters can be detained without trial, forever. We consider this type of development both wrong and dangerous.

Regarding this, Norway has a responsibility. As a country largely sheltered from war and terror, we can go forward as a good example for more openness and more democracy. This is a responsibility of whichwe must be conscious.

Finally, we will commemorate the UN-document A/C.3/66/L.44/Rev. "Promotion and protection of human rights", a document if Norway has been collaborate on drawing. Much of that which seeks in the U.S. now, pepper spraying of peaceful demonstrators, both in autumn 2011 and these days in Oakland is a clear violation on this agreement which highlights importance of facilitating demonstrators and human rights activists will get the opportunity to a perform their message .
