“Basically, we pull over black people”

docshoe:

A friend of mine from grade school, Zack, became a cop. He patrols in Naperville, an upscale neighborhood. My brother and I were making fun of him—neither of us are fond of cops—and we asked him what he does in a nice quiet neighborhood like Naperville. This was his answer.

Needless to say, I hate Naperville.

I am familiar with both those towns and neither one has very many black people. the police in those towns basically set up speed traps and write speeding tickets all day every day

5. There is some truth to it, but it's more than that.

My sister almost married a cop in Manchester, NH. It wasn't so much black people; he said they went by time of day. He said they pulled over just about everyone after 2:00 am. Their rationale was, if you're out at that hour, you're up to no good.

6. My wife's niece lives in a town next to Naperville...

Once when we went to Illinois to visit the fam, I mentioned to her that that I wanted to stop by the nearest B&N to pick up some Mac mags. She told me that the nearest store was in Naperville.

My niece is an olive complected woman of east asian and arab descent, so there's no way that she could be mistaken for white and she's told me that the folks of Naperville made her feel uncomfortable as well.

She warned me not to go over the speed limit, as the cops were ready with any excuse to pull someone like her black uncle over.

So, I drove over to Naperville, making sure to NOT go over the posted speed limit of 25MPH at all. I found a suitable parking spot without incident and walked over to the store.

On my way, I received the most hostile looking stares from the other pedestrians that I encountered. Apparently, an unwelcome element had invaded the lily white environment of Naperville and the denizens were not too pleased.

Anyway, I made it to the store, bought my mags, (from a very nice clerk, BTW) and went back to my car to get the hell out of there… Not going over the speed limit of 25MPH of course. Just the same, as I saw a Naperville cop with his radar gun pointed in my direction.

Once I got back to my niece's place, I told her everything that happened and she told me, "Yeah, that's Naperville for you."

Incidentally, my wife is from Wheaton, and all the times I've been there I can't say that I've ever had anything like the unwelcome vibe that I received in Naperville.

I don't have the luxury of not walking or driving while black in that town.

Naperville sucks.

that anyone is still treated in such a way in this country. I know racism never went away but at least it was politcally incorrect. It wasn't ok to just say racist shit out in public.

Til Bush. Then it was one big hate fest. Not knowing who to hate most gays or blacks. Then came Obama. Blacks won back the top hate spot again then.

It's a shame. I had so much hope for us. We had advanced. Really we had. But back to the 50's attitudes again, we go.

To be fair, Hoity Toits make me feel uncomfortable too, and they might pull me over for having a less than this decade car and not one designer label on my clothing. But not simply because I am the wrong color. I can't even imagine the frustration and level of anger that would make me feel.

May we all live to see a time when this is not the way it is. May we all help to make that time happen.

You drove past a Naperville police officer and didn't get pulled over

He was doing exactly what I described

Sitting there looking for speeders, but I have to agree that Naperville is full of white people , a lot of them racist

14. The thing is that I already know that cops specifically target black people

It's a fact that I have to live with every time I get behind the wheel.

If that cop had to choose between a black speeder and a white speeder, both going the exact same speed, which car do you think he'd pull over?

My niece warned me about Naperville for a very good reason. I heeded her advice and, thus, avoided harassment.

I have no illusions that suburban cops, or cops in general, are colorblind.

passed for black.

life must have been interesting for her.

here is wisconsin i know of a business with locations in milwaukee that moved there headquarters from the middle of a suburb to right next to the freeway exit because there black employees kept getting pulled over on the way to work when they drove into town.
