Salvation Army's red kettles hauled in record $147.6M

Salvation Army's red kettles hauled in record $147.6M

The Salvation Army reports that those lonely bell ringers at stores and malls during the Christmas holiday season brought in a record $147.6 million.

It was the 120th year for the Red Kettle Campaign that began in 1891 on the wharf in San Francisco. Last year, volunteers staffed 25,000 red kettles around the country.

The Salvation Army says its 2011 tally was 3.4% higher than for 2010 and "highlights the support of American donors who gave generously despite a continued slow economy."
