Hundreds of people marched through Manhattan last night to protest the mass arrests in Oakland the day before. In some ways, the action was a lot like many Occupy Wall Street marches that have come before -- chanting, weaving through neighborhoods, occasionally sprinting to outflank the police, finally petering out.
But there were some new elements too: More of the protesters wore black and masked their faces, a protest tactic called Black Bloc that makes it harder for police to pick individuals out of the crowd. Snapple-bottles and soda cans were thrown at police. And a well-known video journalist was assaulted by a masked marcher.
Tim Pool was covering the march last night, livestreaming his video and commentary, when a masked protester ahead of him whirled and struck him, knocking the phone he uses as a camera out of his hands. (You can see Pool's video below.)

The night Occupy Wall Street was evicted from Zuccotti Park, Pool stumbled on a group of occupiers in the midst of letting the air out of the tires of police cruisers. Despite the forceful requests of the sabateurs, Pool refused to stop filming. The resulting confrontation -- broadcast live to thousands -- cemented his reputation among some radical occupiers as untrustworthy, more interested in building his personal brand than supporting the movement.

Personally I am glad for people like Tim Pool, Spencer (oakfosho) and others. They are showing things as they are but doing a good job of the OWS/movement coverage. Those who are doing stupid things (like letting the air out of tires) should be called out. Maybe they are also in it to promote themselves BUT that doesn't deter them from doing their "jobs" (which they do not have to do). Personally I think there are more non violent and good intentioned actions being covered by these citizen journalists than you will ever see on the msm because that is what is actually occurring. However pointing out the less intelligent actions of some cannot be a bad thing, imo.

(884 posts)As reported in the link you provided. Tim Pool also conceded that an undercover may have been his
assaulter. Also in the link you provided. Between your post and the account in the Voice, which ineptly conflated Occupy with Tim Pool's assault in one neat little paragraph, one
might get the wrong idea about what happened and what generally is happening. At Occupy.

(884 posts)I think Tim Pool knows what he's doing. As for your post? An attempt at newspeak,
perhaps?

(57,936 posts)an act that is consistent with non-violence. I'm all for Occupy Wall Street, but I'm not for acts of aggression like letting the air out of tires.
Whether the people who did that were really OWS or just provocateurs is not something we can know.

And your source say "occupiers".
And, you say '"OWS" or "just provocateurs" is not something we can know"'

(18,541 posts)They're not actually doing property damage but, still, not smart.
It is really dangerous to be a 'embeded' journalist in America...can't trust the cops or the protesters. Someone might beat you up and arrest you or just turn around for no reason and hit you. Dangerous job, hope he is okay.
