The other day when someone posted about the slaughter of pregnant Orangutans over palm oil

Last edited Mon Jan 30, 2012, 11:59 PM - Edit history (2)

Plantations I couldn't read it. I only got as far as "moving in for the kill". Just by reading that little, I am still upset. Since I can't read it myself, is there anything we can do to stop this slaughter? This has been eating me away for days. I know there is a lot of animal cruelty, and slaughter everywhere on the globe. Thanks.

Not over palm cream, but palm oil plantations. Sorry.

I've been shocked to learn what is in seemingly benign products. I found a line of moisturizers available online that doesn't use animal products. I don't have anything to do with this company, just a happy customer. http://www.clearandsmoothskin.com/store/

What is happenning is the Orangutans habitat is being cleared to make way for palm oil plantations.

And virtually EVERYONE (you and I included) are buying it.

.......To boycot their company is the only way to get a positive response.......a little research on the company or companies could go a long way to placing them under the worlds watchful eye...Its terribly sad that the only way to reign in corporate greed is through pressure on the bottom line....my heart is with you....

It's so sad that they actually find people who do this stuff. I couldn't do it for a million dollars and have to live with that image in my head forever. I'm glad to see responses, and I felt kind of guilty for not reading it to find out how it can be stopped if it could be, but I just couldn't read it. And I just couldn't sit here and not know if there was something we or I could do. Thank you for your courage to read it, all of you who did.

They're cutting down rainforest's to get what they need to make the palm oil, driving the orangutan's to extinction. I don't know the specific story you're referring to but if you want to help, here's a list of palm oil free products (may need to find something from the US--didn't want to post anything that had graphic imagery):

http://www.orangutans.com.au/Orangutans-Survival-Information/Helping-you-buy-responsibly-Palm-oil-free-alternatives.aspx

Edited to add:
http://www.bonafidegreengoods.com/shop_by_icon.php?icon_id=palmoilfree (it's an online store but you can see what products are palm oil free and then maybe buy them locally)

Also, if you're that concerned about orangutan's, please consider buying products that aren't tested on animals too (there will be a label near the ingredients or manufacturer's name that says the product isn't animal tested). We already know that shampoo burns your eye if it gets in it, we don't need to pour shampoo in a bunny's eyes anymore to know this, yet this practice still goes on. Lots of companies still test on animals, not because they don't have the ability to use computer models but because it's a money-making racket. They get more grants/funds to house testing animals than they would if they used computer modeling. Imagine an animal born and bred to live its life in a cage "cared for" by people that see them as nothing more than a means to an end (more money). For example, if they are testing on dogs, they debark them so they can work in a quieter environment.

Computer modeling is available and it's reliable--much more so than animal testing 'cause humans and animals DO NOT HAVE the same physiology.

I agree man can be inhumane and all animals deserve respect, and shouldn't be used in labs tests. And I know it happens everyday. This story even though I did not read it, I guess I should have. I have mislead the post. I apologize for that. I'm weak when it comes to reading animal cruelty stories. It's just this one stuck with me.

I didn't see the thread about the orangutans (thankfully), but when I read here about the Moon Bears that are tortured for their bile in Asia I had a similar reaction that I still haven't gotten over.

It feels like the weight of the world has swooped down on your back and you can barely function, let alone go about as normal.

The horrible, horrible things we do to animals is unbearable to think about.

Seriously, read the ingrediant labels on packaged foods: bread, crackers, cereal, tomato sauces, candy, peanut butter. It's EVERYWHERE! I spent 15 minutes on Saturday trying to find peanut butter that didn't contain palm oil. I try to cook from scratch but PB's a bit difficult.

The only way to stop this is hitting 'em in the bottom line.
