a barrel and a plunger. A hack berry (from the hack berry tree) would be pushed to the end of the barrel (3-4 inches in length) and a second hack berry would then be plunged into that hack berry which would be propelled at a goodly velocity. The hack berry is green and similar in size to a small green pea. I never knew of any one getting injured, but a hack berry shot to the eye might blind that person. Of course, we were obvious to any such danger.

My grandmother was a county agent with the Texas A&M Extension Service. She spent the Depression teaching people how to make mattresses with surplus cotton. Previously they had only had hay to sleep on. She taught women how to can fruits and vegetables, nutrition, cooking, household management, sewing, raising fruits and vegetables, and probably a whole lot of other things.

She saw the good that the New Deal and the State Extension Service did in lifting the poor out of utter poverty, and she taught them life skills. Every county in Texas has an ag agent and a home demonstration agent. They are full of useful advice and this advice is totally free. Most, if not all states, have a statewide Extension Service based at their A&M college.
