I've been to Tilted Kilt a few times after golfing. The waitress was very nice to me. We even talked about the guys that I had golfed with....she didn't ignore me, the way the Hooter chick did.
But, those are just my experiences.

(14,487 posts)When Hurricane Ike hit, I was without electricity for over 3 weeks. Hooters was one of the first places to reopen near me with free wifi. So I would pack up my laptop, get a table by the electric outlet, and "camp" there for a few hours at a time. I'd have lunch and a few beers, but they surely could have made more money on a larger table, so I always tipped with a $20. The staff loved me because I was a low maintenance table that tipped well and they didn't have to pretend to hit on me or put up with being hit on by me.
The food is marginal, the beer is cold. I don't have a problem with scantily clad wait staff. I see more skin on the beach anyway.

(15,373 posts)At my first "real job" in the "real world" in the late 90s, I was in a group and made friends with two or three guys who went to "celebrate holidays." They would use it as an excuse to out the Friday before whatever holiday was coming up. I'm sure it was about the scantily clad girls - especially at first - I won't deny that's an attraction, but we all got addicted to their buffalo chicken sandwiches, and we all enjoyed the company of this one waitress, who was very intelligent - she was in her late twenties and going back to college (already had one degree). She worked at Hooters because it fit her schedule, and she realized she had the assets to make it pay well for her - not just physically, but she could do the party girl routine and schmooze. She was personable, told great jokes, and once sang, "Me and Bobby McGee," acapela and sounded just like Janis Joplin.
Plus, she totally insulted our boss one time when he insisted on coming with us (though we didn't want him along). After one of her jokes, he told one that involved ripping up a napkin and rearranging the pieces into a cross, where the punchline was more of an attempt at proselytization. She just looked straight at him and said, "Boy... that sucked."

I am by no means intimate with the fashion industry, but it strikes me as rather curious that you would use that term and then expect your readers to believe they are all young teenagers.
I think the industry is too broad and the requirements too varied to make such a blanket statement.
Are a certain percentage of the girls that model for the catalog segment younger? Yes, sure. Are they ALL 12? Not by a long shot.
And FWIW, with a short amount of Googling time, I could bring up scores of women (and Men, for that matter) who continue to do modeling gigs well into their 40's and 50's and beyond, faces I have been seeing since I was a child, and that's been 40 years.
Methinks you labor under a misapprehension.
BainsBane
(53,010 posts)For top designers and those who do appear in Vogue, Marie Claire, W, etc. . Catalog is far from top tier. In fact, to be told one is best suited for catalog modeling is a major diss. Many high fashion models are very young. Most start in the early teens. You probably don't realize how young they are because they are very tall and have lots of make up on. I'm not saying they are all that young, but anyone over 30 is very rare. They are considered old at 27.
This one is 10
Gemma Ward began modeling at 14. I don't think that is atypical. What's unusual is the success of her career.
15 years old
This one is 15
They don't give the age of this one, other than to say she is a top model wearing Dior to her prom. She looks much older than the others, doesn't she?
When women start to develop hips suitable for child rearing, they cease being useful for high fashion designers. They want them incredibly thin without full hips or breasts. That's why so many are young.

Business model is more hype than anything else. If it wasn't for people complaining about them, they wouldn't do near the business they are doing now.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,360 posts)precisely because their business is NOT where it used to be, as they have lost market share to the other upstarts as well as realizing their menu has become stale and out of date (according to some recent articles on the industry I have read). Drahthaardogs
(6,843 posts)Breaded (very heavily) and their sauce does not hit you with heat and spice, but rather, the vinegar flavor is overwhelming. The whole "Hooter Girl" thing is way overdone and overhyped. They wear t-shirts and short orange shorts with flesh colored nylons. More skin is exposed in a ballet.
But that is just me.
Atman
(31,464 posts)Not only are all the wings available "naked," as in no breading, there is also a pretty good variety of flavors. The only thing I order at Hooters are the naked Three Mile Island wings, with some fries and an icy cold Sam Adams draft. The wings and fries are always fresh and hot, not premade sitting under a heat lamp. That said, the food in general is just average-to-good pub food.
The servers outfits can only be called "tantalizing" if you're a prude. It's a sports bar, basically. Your comments don't accurately reflect the place, because you don't have to get heavily breaded wings with vinegary hot sauce.
Drahthaardogs
(6,843 posts)Their "standard" wing is a crappy, heavily breaded, vinegar-soaked piece of disgusting goo. For a place that supposedly has "famous" chicken wings, they suck ass. It is good to know that you can ask them to fuck them up a little less though with some special ordering. If I ever have the misfortune of eating there again I will remember that.
Atman
(31,464 posts)I agree that the breaded wings are too much. Not exactly a "piece of disgusting goo," but not good. Part of the problem is that Hooters doesn't use big, meaty wings. They're on the scrawny side, and can't hold up to the thick breading. It's more like deep fried breading with a little bit of chicken inside. I like the Three Mile Island flavor, so I decided to try 'em naked. Again, they're on the menu.
BTW, the basic hot sauce is essentially Frank's or Tobasco, which are both vinegar based. It's pretty common for wing joints to take the easy route and use one of these. If you actually follow Frank's "original Buffalo wings" recipe, it cuts the vinegary hot sauce with a ton of butter. That's usually how the milder wings are made.
Anyway, we all like what we like. My real point was that the op asked about the food, and your implication was that the wings only come one way. Peace! Enjoy your wings!

(5,169 posts)I put that ish on almost everything! As far as I am concerned, vinegar and cayenne are two of the healthiest things in the world to eat. It has always been an instant mood elevator. Lentils and Frank's really rocks!
Atman
(31,464 posts)Always make there's at least one bottle in the house. I love it fried eggs. I was just pointing out that traditional Buffalo wings use vinegar-based cayenne pepper sauce -- like Frank's. I doubt Hooters is just adding more vinegar.

(24,853 posts)The wings are OK. The hamburgers were comparable to most other places. The beer is cold. What more could one ask of a sports bar is what I'm wondering...
I'll say this though: Anyone who's obsessed with what their servers wear must be totally and completely horrified by how people at an ocean beach or public pool present themselves. Can we please be honest here? It's NOT about their food, it's about what their servers wear and how it makes people who refuse to go there FEEL and why in the FUCK would anyone care? Don't like it? Don't fucking go there. God damn can it be more simple than that?
They're a legit business, their business model works, and if shorts and t-shirts or tank tops are evil, they're all going to hell. The servers will go to hell as well as the managers/franchise owners who kidnap them and force them to work there.

(75,480 posts)for car repairs. There was a Hooters on the block, so we went there to wait. I didn't think it was so bad. Of course, back in the day I had to go to The Playboy Club with one of my employers to entertain clients. I found the outfits much more revealing and the tone was sexist. The food was so so. The girls were wearing shorts and T's so they weren't revealing anymore than they would at the gym. There wasn't the overt sexism like in the Playboy Club. I live in a beach area so you see a lot of shorts and T-shirts by both boy and girl servers in just ordinary coffee shops and donut shops whatever. I really don't get the outrage.
If they pay permits, licenses and taxes and the waitresses pay taxes, yes it's a legit business. I think the problem with Hooters is the name. If they changed the name to Herb's and nothing else, there would be no outrage.

(39,154 posts)I vaguely remember liking whatever it was I ate. I seem to recall the menu was typical bar food. I was practicing law then and I went there with two other male attorneys.
The seating arrangement was unusually high, presumably to be able to look at the waitress's cleavage. She laid it on a bit thick with statements about how glad she was to see us and how cool we were. She may have been partly sincere since the place was deserted and she was paid in tips.
That was about 15 years ago. I haven't had any reason to go again. Apart from their rather awkward "look at boobs!" marketing, it was no different than any other chain tavern.

Greasy, over-priced fast-food, an abundance of chubby polo-clad office doods, and tightly-clothed waitresses. And, sports tv of course.
Last time I went I was dragged by a co-worker and, oddly, his wife, who was actually the more insistent. There had been some drinking earlier.
Strange moment when the server leaned across me to examine her cleavage in the reflection of a window and used both hands to "level things out."
Years ago. Haven't been back. A family member did later similarly drag me to a knockoff version (purple shorts instead of orange). I had campaigned for regular fast food, but my companion curled her lip (second time dragged there by a woman) and derided the idea of a cheeseburger. She then ordered a cheeseburger from the Faux-Hooters, which took 20 minutes to arrive and was not particularly good.

(25,183 posts)On the other side of the Hooters in Hackensack, NJ, there is a really good beer bar called Firewaters, and I go in there once in awhile. Since they share a kitchen, my food orders are sometimes delivered to my spot at the bar by a Hooters-uniformed waitress, who I always smile at and thank graciously.
Many of the bartenders (and even a manager or two that I've known) in the Firewaters establishment started out in Hooters, and many of them went to work at more upscale places in the NYC area. I guess it's a possible step on a career ladder, if you chose to make it one. I can't say I've spoken with a lot of the Hooters servers, but I invariably find the Firewaters ones either have a degree, or are actively working on one.
I've always treated them with the respect they deserved from the get-go, and with further admiration as they've shared their stories with me when the bar gets slow. I remember one in particular who shared that she was nearing the end of her studies in radiology, then I blurted out, "No wonder you can always see right through me!"

(24,853 posts)You have most of it right, as in it's requisite here at DU to hate certain places (Hooters, Olive Garden, McDonalds, Texas, etc.), certain things (television for one), certain people (too f'kn many to even list a single example here), certain religions (Christianity tops that category), and certain movies (Forrest Gump started more than a few flamefests here, as did Avatar). DU is funny that way. Sometimes it's all about "cred". "Fuck Bush!" as a thread title was once capable of getting you a couple hundred recs.
What I don't get about your post though is the question was "Have you ever been to Hooters" and your answer was "Hell no..." yet you go on to describe the people you see when you're there in as much a denigrating way as you can muster ("idiots... eating gross unhealthy food" .
I love these threads though. Being that it's all about credibility, you're likely to see any number of meaningless statements about everything from the quality of the food to the shitty American beer (last time I was there I saw probably 40 different micro-brewed and imported beers) to the stripper nature of clothing their servers wear (it's as much a strip joint as Djiorno is pizza). It's not a fine dining establishment for chrissakes. It doesn't claim to be and in fact their motto is "Delightfully tacky, yet unrefined".
DUers are connoisseurs of fine dining, beer, and other things. They are also mockers of anything the slightest bit kitschy. Gotta love this place; it's the best entertainment day in and day out I've ever found on the intertubes.

(13,324 posts)But I honestly find the "Hooters girls" gimmick lame - not even particularly offensive, just boring. Nor will I condemn anyone else for their dining/entertainment choices, worst thing I might do is roll my eyes at them.
So yeah, enjoy your beer and hot wings. Nobody's stopping you.

(3,073 posts)I do not support Hooters. Much rather spend my dollars at places that are in alignment with my political views and Hooters which is all about objectifying women's bodies - most especially does not.

I did my one time visit 2 years ago on New Years eve w/my son in Traverse City, Michigan.
Less then 2 hours before we were on Sleeping Bear Dunes and had the place to ourselves ...
the difference between the utter solicitude of the dunes and some wilderness and the
noise and lights of a Hooters was stunning. I laughed when I noticed that all the waitresses
had on wedding bands or engagement rings. Oh well it struck me as really degrading for the
woman but it was "a job."
BTW we drove back to the cabin we were staying in a really thick fog and we saw a big foot
and a UFO too.

(2,064 posts)I didn't think that the attire was that skimpy. Their tops are a little low cut but I see more than that when shopping for groceries. And since they have to wear such thick tights it's there short shorts don't reveal any more skin than a pair of leggings.
I did entertain myself by watching the few delusional men who actually thought these women were interested in them but most of the men had all their attention on the football games being shown and barely paid any attention to the waitresses.

(47,534 posts)And the fact that I live within an hour of hundreds and hundreds of restaurants, and that no one's ever accused Hooters of having better than average food, I can't imagine why I'd ever go there. Pretty girls in tight clothes? Like another poster upthread said, this is SoCal. If I want to see a pretty girl in tight clothes, I just gotta open my eyes.

(12,629 posts)Several of us decided to dine at Hooters in downtown Indy late on a Saturday night. We asked to be seated in the "breast-handicapped" area.
The young lady that greeted us was either very tired, or a bit dense. "Uh, I don't think we have one of those."
The food was average, but the waitresses were very nice. We learned that most of them were college kids with schedules so full, they had little choice but to work late nights.
They were law, medical and business students. None that we talked to were proud to be working there, but the hours (and of course the money) were good.
We spent a couple hours there. They learned from us the importance of self-vigilance regarding breast health. We learned that the ladies employed there viewed it as a temporary way to get where they were going.

Definitely not my kind of place. I thought the food wasn't very good and I felt as if the waitress we had was overly friendly, deliberately touching my arm and shoulder at various times during our time there. Not that I'm a prude, I just remember thinking at the time that these gestures on her part were phony and manipulative.

(25,704 posts)It has been many years but the wings were meh, very meh.
This is my feelings about strip clubs and Hooters, as a guy. You are not going home with any of them so why bother? (Except that one time, and my buddy was already dating another dancer but that was a long time ago.)

(31,464 posts)As many others have pointed out, the servers at Hooters are far from naked. On a warm summer day, you'll see people on the street wearing the same outfits. And less...they always lots of heavy underthings underneath those white tops. Maybe they should call the place "Cleavage" instead of Hooters. If you go to the place to see boobies, you'll be sorely disappointed.
As for "not going home with any of them," I've frequently gone home with a tray of left-over wings. That's what I go to Hooters for. I don't go to strip clubs at all.

(115,101 posts)Apparently to some, there is no difference between a woman being paid to be a decoration and women out going about their business dressed however they like.
And treating women in public as if they are decorations is also fucked up. It's idiotic to assume women who are dressed in any socially commonplace way are doing so to get attention. Bikinis at the beach are not out of the ordinary.

(110,159 posts)that is the issues. girls are expected to sell themselves whether they want to or not, to a certain point, in a sexual manner. as opposed to other jobs, even those that high because of attractiveness.
these restaurants allow a sexually harrassing environment for the workers, because that is the whole point of drawing the boys in.
come on in and hit on, degrade adn talk about our gals boobs. that is what they are here for.
now.... at this point, have i once mentioned what they wear. BUT.... that will be all the pro hooter people will focus on.

(20,277 posts)The burgers were pretty good. Both times my sons were with us. There were families, couples and a table or 2 of guys. The boys were about 7, I think. The waitress was very nice and brought them crayons to color on the placemats. We were coming home from being on a vacation, and wanted more choices than the usual fast food. I did send the ex in first to see if it was okay for the kids. The waitresses were more entranced by the boys than they were with them.

(8,217 posts)He loved the wings. Prices were reasonable at certain times, so he made us order and sit at a table during happy hour so that we can get a ton of wings for cheap.
Their food has gone a bit downhill since the 90s though. I haven't been there for a long while. I might go there if I want to watch a boxing or UFC fight that is big(there is no cover charge, and I can go for their curly fries which are awesome!). Since I don't know any other sports bars, nor have I bothered to look for them. I rarely go.
We don't see it as bad. I see women dressed up in less in the summer.
My sister sometimes does request me to pick up wings now and then. Although, since we found this Korean wings place, I haven't been doing that either.

Ever been to Hooters? What is your opinion [View all]
Speaking of Hooters, I never been to one. I would definitely go though, if an opportunity presented itself, like a friend asked me to go or something. What do you think, are they a legit business, or do you object to their business model?
