Cold Spring Police Chief Phil Jones, left, and Rocori School District Superintendent Scott Staska hold bulletproof white boards in Cold Spring, Minn., on April 22. Rocori schools are among the first in the nation to acquire the kevlar whiteboards which can be flipped quickly to provide some protection for teachers and students in the event of a shooting.

Shooter shows up and starts shooting the place up, so you quickly rip the whiteboard from the wall and shield yourself form the bullets.
We are all about false sense of security, take your shoes and belt off at the airport but don't let your pants fall down, stop selling pressure cookers and don't allow cameras at sporting events, but for god sake don't prevent the shooter from getting assault weapons because that is his inalienable right.

(9,965 posts)I used to make tooling 'n such for ballistic helmets and armor. "Bulletproof" is a very relative thing. Most of the stuff described as bulletproof is nearly transparent to common hunting rifles. Ours were tested with .44 mag (pistol) and soft bullets, and those penetrated most of the layers of Kevlar. IIRC, even the modest M1 Carbine has considerably more wallop than a .44 pistol.
The money spent on these is a waste.

(46,179 posts)I'm just happy to finally have a REAL white board in the classroom, replacing the cheap shower board that substituted for a board for years before that. If someone started shooting, we'd be diving for cover, not trying to wrestle the white boards off the wall.

Oklahoma school superintendent candidate calls for bulletproof textbooks
(Grady County, Oklahoma-NBC) October 24, 2006 - A retired veteran and candidate for Oklahoma state school superintendent says he wants to make schools safer by creating bulletproof text books.
Bill Crozier says the books could give students and teachers a fighting chance if there's a shooting at their school. Crozier, who is running for state superintendent of education, took to an open field near Minco to see if a textbook could stop a bullet during a school shooting.
