Feinberg is experienced dealing with people facing profound loss, but he doesn't seek the work.
"I must tell you every time I do one, you say to yourself, 'God I hope this is the last one," he said.
Feinberg handled victims' compensation after 9/11, the BP oil spill, the Virginia Tech shootings and the Colorado movie theater shootings, among other calamities.
He's now advising a panel distributing money after the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., and mediating Penn State's settlement discussions with the sex abuse victims of former football coach Jerry Sandusky.
The experiences are wrenching, he said. And recipients invariably resent him, thinking he's trying to put a price on the priceless things they've lost.
"Don't expect thanks or appreciation or gratitude, none of that," Feinberg said. "We have very emotional victims and you're offering them money instead of a limb, instead of the return of a family member. This is a no-win situation."
SNIP:
In Boston, Feinberg will be dealing with complex injuries, such as numerous amputations, including cases where victims lost both legs. Feinberg hopes to be ready to meet with families by June 15 and get checks out by June 30.

The Eugene Marathon in Oregon -- A record number of runners take to the streets and honor Boston
Evidence that the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon was on peoples mind was everywhere Sunday at the Eugene Marathon, but it did not seem to take over the race.
Word got around that a simple hand-over-heart gesture at the finish line would indicate support for the victims of the April 15 tragedy, and many exhausted runners remembered to do it.
Some handmade signs by spectators remembered Boston, some runners wore Boston Strong T-shirts, and there was a large, white, Eugene4Boston banner that quickly filled up with colorful signatures, prayers and other greetings to the Massachusetts capital.
Overall, it was a record-breaking day for the Eugene event, showing that the running community would not be deterred by fear of attacks.
Close to 9,000 people participated in the marathon and half-marathon, up 700 from last year, said Richard Maher, race director.
Eugene resident Zach Klonoski ran his third marathon just two weeks after completing the Boston Marathon. He had not planned to run the Eugene race, but after the bombings in Boston decided to sign up.

(83,638 posts)Such a beautiful link and post to the Eugene Marathgon. Their love and support to Boston is simply beautiful. Gretchen dedicated a leg to Boston. Tears.
dedicated one of her legs to Boston literally. She wrote the words This leg dedicated to Boston on her right leg with a Sharpie marker.
She said the terrorist attack at Boston hit close to home because she knows she easily could have been there. She ran the Boston Marathon in 2010 and had numerous friends there this year.
The fact that many people lost their legs in the attack, and that marathons by their nature are wedded to humans legs, is what inspired her to write the message at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, Strohlein said.
Even when she was feeling tired during the race, remembering the victims gave her strength. You know what? Youve got both your legs, she would tell herself.
