Kids in college die from binge drinking or binge drinking and then an accident because they did something stupid while drunk (including driving). I'm not aware of any college student deaths due to occasional marijuana use. Actually, I'm not aware of any college student deaths at all due to marijuana use.

I remember being on IM with my bf and all of a sudden my neighbor comes in and begs to use my phone (one line per room and her roommate was on the phone).

The high school student doing the weekend visit had to be rushed to the ER with alcohol poisoning.

legal amphetamines. Students fake symptoms to get a script or else they buy someone else's pill to get a leg up over the competition when it comes to studying for an exam.

He did this before the midterm and final last year. In both cases, he whined to the professor about being up all night studying, and the professor gave him an extra 90 minutes to complete the midterm and about 60 extra minutes to complete the final.

On edit - this kid also made a trip to the ER for alcohol poisoning and was ticketed by police.

In the case of illegal drug use, my daughter was really pissed about it. It was a clear violation of the honor code for both the professor and student.

In my experience professors view the practice of studying all night with scorn and would do absolutely nothing to accommodate it.

Took his exam and wondered why he turned it in well before anyone else.

When he got it back it had a low grade even though he had gotten every question he answered correct, he just forgot to turn the paper over for the other half of the exam.

Details are important.

Kids and adults do things when drunk they would never ever in a million years do sober, risky, regrettable, stupid, and sometimes dangerous things , where as when smoking pot the most they might do that they wouldn't do sober is eat 3 Big Macs, seems a no brainer to me

Binge drinking comes second, because it's another dumb and dangerous thing to do.

Pot is not at all dangerous, so that would not worry me.

of alcoholism is troubling. Kids do it. We all know that. But in a kid with the propensity life can change permanently before it even gets started.

Binge drinking is having 4 (for women) or 5 (for men) drinks in an evening, so it could be no big deal at all.

Using stimulants to worries me more because the behavior is so nakedly a dependence. They're depending on the drug to be capable of doing the work. This could easily lead to habituation and addiction. What is more, they will think they need this drug to perform academically, thus making it easy to justify continuing the behavior. Also, I think illegal use of prescription stimulants is a introductory course to using cocaine or meth.

I'd be about equally worried about a meth binge and binge drinking, honestly.

And was huffing glue (he was grounded a lot, hence he resorted to glue). Docs refused to believe us until he tested positive for THC.

It is amazing that addicts can function so well.

Anyone who is into huffing will settle for just about any substance. If he had freedom and money it would have been whatever. I think with addicts, it is not always the exact substance, it is the behavior.

He went to rehab and became active in 12 steps. Although he wasn't much of a drinker, he gravitated to Alcoholics Anonymous because they provided the most support.

As parents, it was a scary time for us.

None of them "worry me" unless there is the presence of other factors. Binge drinking in college, absent other factors, is just one of many stupid things young people do. To a certain extent the same with pot. Abusing ADHD drugs has its risks, but if it is extremely isolated, so be it. Now, throw in various contexts such as family history, addictive personality, peer pressure, or general mental health issues and I can get worried about almost anything, including sleep deprivation, which is how I got through engineering school.

He has problems with low blood sugar and I know that can make it worse.
He has tried pot since he left home, and I am okay with that, because I know that won't kill him. I do worry about him getting busted with it because then it is good bye financial aid!

Right this moment, drying out again for the umpteenth time, but not sure I will ever be able to completely stop. I've told my girls to smoke all the pot they want, drop all the acid they want - anything but alcohol or meth (meth never did a thing for me, I'm just afraid it might latch onto them). Meanwhile, alcohol has cost me tens of thousands of dollars.

The THC test saved his life and got him in rehab.

Scarey time I tell you.
