MARIN CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- Imagine you bought an expensive big screen TV and it simply didn't work. That's what happened to a Marin County woman who says her TV came from the store already broken.
Flat screen TVs give you great pictures but the slightest crack can disable the entire set and most warranties won't cover cracked screens. This woman says her brand new TV cracked coming out of the box, but the warranty didn't cover a repair and she couldn't return it to the store.
Snip:
She contacted 7 On Your Side and we contacted Walmart and two weeks later, the retailer gave her a call. "They said, 'So what's going on with your TV?'" said Barnes.
Walmart agreed to take back the TV and provide a full refund. A Walmart spokesperson said it was not clear what caused the cracks, but: "This is not the experience we want our customers to have. Ultimately we did the right thing by taking care of Ms. Barnes and resolved the issue with her."

Really love the "Ultimately we did the right thing" comment, like they couldn't have done this from the start?

(11,804 posts)Possibly bad reporting - but if she cracked the screen by not being careful as she was unloading the TV, than she would be on the hook? I don't know.

(38,958 posts)it's also possible it was damaged when packed, warehoused or transported, hard to say with concealed damaged.

(67,786 posts). . . . If the thing is poorly packed or, more likely, so intricately packed, it is possible to break something like that accidentally. The lesson here ought o go back to the manufacturer.
All the above is speculation. It could have broken in shipment, been broken from the factory, or the purchaser may have been a world class klutz.

(26,591 posts)so yeah, she was a bona fide IDIOT for buying a television.
a-yup.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)it was her money and her choice. I do not believe calling someone "stupid" or an "idiot" adds to the debate.

After reading "TV = Stupid", I tend to agree with that statement.

(67,786 posts)How is buying a tv "stupid?"
datasuspect
(26,591 posts)period.
STUPID STUPID STUPID.
completely passive activity. results in brainwashing. complete waste of time that accomplishes ZERO.

(2,467 posts)I guess that blows your whole theory out of the water.
I don't think absence of a tv made a difference in your case lol.

almost every house i seem to go to, they seem to have one on.
but it largely depends on social class: self-actualized, intelligent people and very wealthy people don't often sit in front of the tv drooling. nor is there one CONSTANTLY on, even when guests are present.
your average run-of-the-mill workerbot or cube drone - not so much.

(20,176 posts)When I grew up we went to the theater if we wanted entertainment to watch the live action entertainment and throw tomatoes at the bad actors. Huzzah! Great fun. Of course you couldn't go out with turkeys on your feet, you'd look like a fool. You need an onion for your belt.

Of course a truly reputable company would replace it no questions asked. But she probably put a wrench in the works when she said it was her fault.
"...cracked coming out of the box..." is the key phrase.

(62,510 posts)if it was cracked out of the box, whouldn't that be enough?
Drale
(7,932 posts)it didn't work out of the box but I took it back to Best Buy and they had no problem exchanging it for another one. I don't know if it was a manufacturing defect or it was dropped in the warehouse or something but it didn't work when I took it out of the box.

(11,862 posts)and WalMart had no problem with taking them back and replacing them FREE of charge to us...they were delivered and not picked up...
So I am not sure why this woman had a problem, except she said she caused the crack...
