The real time footage of that tornado forming today was mesmerizing.

As a child I was horrified of tornadoes, though living in in eastern Ohio, even damage blamed on tornadoes was probably what we now call microbursts.

Xenia rocked hard in my consciousness.

Though terrified of them I devoured every bit of information about them I could.

Which wasn't much.

The information was lacking at that time. It seemed no one really knew how exactly these formed. There were only a few grainy photos, fewer "films." (that's what we called moving pictures then sonny boy)

At that time, low information, no one really knew when a thunderstorm might cause a tornado. They said there might be a one minute warning.

Now?

People know a day ahead of time tornadoes may be likely. They have live radar of a projected path.

This saves countless lives.

I think you are right that the present system of weather alerts are saving lives.
