I don't get the Cheerios commercial hooplah.

I thought biracial couples are commonplace in this day and age.

I remember biracial couples on The Jeffersons as a kid - and even The Electric Company had a biracial couple in a skit in the 70s.

A bunch of shows on HGTV have interracial couples, as well as same-sex couples, and I don't recall people having fits about those.

And there are these celebrity couples:

Why is the Cheerios commercial causing such a stir?

1. I remember seeing interracial couples all the time in the 80's. Now I hardly ever see any.

Economic inequality has caused more segregation I think. Also, racist white people tend to move away from communities that have black people in them. That makes the segregation even worse.

2. The PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES is biracial!

The threads about this commercial make it sound like biracialism is the last taboo. I don't get it either.

How is a commercial featuring the same type of family as the one the President of the United States was raised in be so cutting-edge?

....... they are almost NEVER represented on television commercials, at least not in the United States. I've seen commercials featuring interracial couples in Canada and Europe, but it's a rare, rare bird in Amurka.

I live in Iowa, and I see plenty of mixed race families. I can't believe anyone finds them "shocking" or whatever the complainers have a problem with.

8. I would've expected controversy with a gay couple raising a child in a commercial like this...

It never occurred to me that this would be an issue for people in the 21st century.

and I don't recall an uproar. Is it because the Cherrios commercial has a child in it? Mind boggling.

If it were not for the internet we wouldn't even know there was any hooplah.

So it was a real WTF? when I saw the headlines. Had to see it a third time in order to see what the racist assholes were upset about...

I don't get why marriage equality is such a big deal....it's been here since 2005, and no one has had their marriage collapse, married their brother or sister or their dog. Trust me, it's not such a big deal. I don't understand this business about God-given rights. Rights are given by the state in most places, and if you decide to go out and bomb your neighbour or kill the local jerk, you'll find out how fast they are taken away. I don't get why the pigment in someone's skin or their sexual preference or their weight is a barrier to their success.

As I said, there are a lot of things I don't get, and I suspect there are a lot of things that will remain that way.

making the child a living monument to white supremacy's worst nightmare: sexual commitment of a white woman to a black male.

Had the mother been black and the father white, this wouldn't have happened. And even with the comments removed on the YouTube Site, it has a 94% "Like" rating.
