Carmel High School senior Chelsea Blaney was just trying to show some school spirit when she posted a yearbook photo of the couple deemed cutest by the graduating class of 2013.
"Two of my best friends won Cutest Couple of our senior class," she wrote on her Tumblr. "First time in my school history a same sex couple has even been able to run for this category, not to mention winning it. So proud of them, and my school."
Her local pride soon went global, racking up over 100,000 notes on Tumblr in just three days, and making the rounds on dozens of websites.
Kevin Carroll, Carmel High's principal confirmed to The Journal News that this was indeed the first same-sex couple to be voted "cutest" by the student body.

I LOVE IT when society takes another step in the right direction. This new generation is going to surprise us one time after another. Bravo Carmel High School!

Just wait a couple of years when he shows up at the MTV VMAs loaded off his ass, muttering anti-Semetic slogans about Jesus and gets caught in a hotel room with two hookers, a man model, a bag of crack, a quart of Valvoline and a Great Dane in a diaper.
It will be fun!

(2,379 posts)I grew up about 30 minutes from Carmel and back when I was in high school, no one was "out" (1970s). A girl in my graduating class ended up being the Boston attorney who won the landmark gay marriage case in Massachusetts.
You can't imagine the smile on my face right now! This is so great to see!

My daughter graduated that school last year, and she is thrilled. She knows both boys.
Put that in your tea pot and drink it, Greg Ball, you homophobic bag of shit. (And just wait till my daughter gets hold of you in your next public forum)

(3,927 posts)I don't know much about it at all, but I went as a guest of friends who belonged to a "club" in Carmel. It struck me as a lovely community and this "club" was lots of different types, with lots of aging hippies, like my friends, and they seemed to fit well in the community -- very down-to-earth, into the beautiful natural surroundings and lots of acceptance/congeniality between the majority NYC "club" members who chose this place in Carmel as their second homes (and the houses were nice but wonderful, relaxed woodsy kinds of places, not the pseudo-palaces you see among wealthy these days) and the community. It really was a beautiful, laid back area -- don't know what it's like now, but back in the early 80s, it was a slice of heaven IMO.
A hearty bravo to this wonderful couple, the high school, the principal, and parents who celebrate the love these young men share! What a warm and wonderful way to end my day -- thanks for posting it, Don.

(5,762 posts)There are still pockets of the liberal woods, and these folks (self included) belong to the local arts council and land trust.
Regrettably, there are larger pockets of disaffected, working-class people who reliably vote very Republican. The town of Carmel doesn't even have a Democratic committee to speak of. The last committee chair was an embarrassment: her SOP was to cross-endorse Republicans for all offices and gavel the meeting. Added to this mix are a cozy bunch of property developers, construction engineers, and their flunkies who can be counted on to stack the planning and zoning boards with their drones.
The pestilence that is Greg Ball (and formerly, Nan Hayworth) practices race-baiting with these folks as a tried and true trick. It works every time.
But, it must be said, our side is gaining ground. Our side doesn't shut up, and our side leads by example. I'm proud of our kids.

(16,350 posts)Way cool! This generation may or may not not reach a higher living standard, but they seem to have a higher moral standard than many older folks. My kid's high school abd college aged friends are the opposite of bigots and they are scary smart. There's hope for the future, especially once the old stick-in-the-muds get out of the way.

(3,596 posts)I am so happy for the younger LGBT persons....
I am in my mid 50s and while I personally did not experience much gay-bashing, I could never have imagined this in my school.
We do progress slowly as people and I shed tears looking at this and asking "why could that not have been me in 1974 with a boy on whom I had a crush/?)
This is great. I am so happy people have come around to understanding that same-sex love is no different than heterosexual love. Love is love.
