Satire ~
He quickly put it back in his pocket as legislators looked on and then continued to speak. Several DPS officers were on hand but did not seem concerned about Rep. Alvins possession of an illegal substance.
Ironically, the bill being discussed pertained to decreasing penalties for the possession of small amounts of cannabis. If passed, the bill would change state law and no longer jail those with small amounts and would instead only require a fine.
Rep. Alvin spoke in opposition to the bill stating marijuana is a deadly and dangerous drug. It ruins peoples lives and is so addictive that people can become hooked on it just by touching it. We have to keep in mind that allowing any steps towards its legalization will ensure that children have access to this drug. Only by keeping it illegal and imposing tough sentences can we continue to ensure that this plant is no longer consumed by people who should not have it.

Any rolled up piece of paper can look like a joint. Back in high school, my friend and I once rolled up some fake joints to rile up the school narcotics officer and the vice principal. This was back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and you had to actually have illegal drugs in your possession in order to be arrested and/or expelled. As I recall, the school nark had a pretty good sense of humour about it when he realized we'd faked him out. The vice principal didn't.

(5,311 posts)...The Tribune Herald appears to be a satirical web site.
There is no such place as Altruria, TX, and Republican Texas State Representative Tom Alvin apparently does not exist, either.

But if it had been true then the statement "...so addictive that people can become hooked on it just by touching it." would have represented a degree of stupidity which no words could adequately address.
