Scientific Ignorance, Corruption, and Racism: the Three Drivers of our Marijuana Policy
Almost every day we hear about a new medical study coming out of Harvard Medical, Tel Aviv University, or some other major scientific or medical institute showcasing the health benefits of marijuana. Every week or so we see another fantastic piece of journalism that exposes the aggressive moneyed interests in the Prison and Pharmaceutical industries (to say nothing about the interests of foreign Drug Lords) in keeping Marijuana illegal.
Scientific ignorance and corruption are two very well documented and thoroughly discussed drivers of our existing marijuana policies. I want to discuss the third primary driver: racism.
Like removing extending voting hours and cutting voting booths in "certain" counties, closing grade schools in "certain districts", jacking up student loan interest rates on "certain" income levels, and cutting funding to transportation infrastructure in "certain" cities - marijuana enforcement is yet another way conservatives wage their brutal and inhumane War on Minorities while shielding themselves from direct allegations of racism.
We need to push data like the graphs above. We need to share and promote stories of racist drug enforcement, like the NYPD "stop and frisk" policies that disproportionately affected minorities that was covered extensively on this site a year or so ago and occasional resurfaces. We need to do our best to make sure that the first thing ANY independent or undecided voter thinks when they hear a conservative voice support for our existing marijuana policies is "That guy/gal is a racist".
