Shelter in the storm

It bears repeating that the scam artists are once again on the loose in Tornado Alley following the most recent disasters in Oklahoma. Authorities are recommending that persons first check with the Better Business Bureau and other agencies before hiring a storm shelter contractor. However, it also bears repeating that The National Wind Institute at Texas Tech University (Lubbock, Texas) is a wise source. Here is the site:

As a brief intro, The National Wind Institute was born in the destruction of a true horror story long-hidden away in tornado lore. The Great Lubbock Tornado of May 11, 1970, was so sudden that few witnesses who are able to remember (and want to remember) can explain what happened. I've read about or heard almost every tornado story in Texas, and the Lubbock Tornado is not an experience a person wants inside their head. Despite amazing work by local news photographers, not even they could fully capture the seemingly science fiction nature of some of the damage.

After the dead were counted, a group of young researchers from Texas Tech University turned the destruction into a laboratory and dedicated their lives to saving as many people as they could. Over the decades they have become far better known overseas than even in their home state. You will rarely see them on camera and yet their work has perhaps touched the lives of everyone reading this. It might be the windows they designed for your office, auto aerodynamics or building codes where you live. Even as I write, they are hurrying along, trying to stay ahead of the worsening climate. Godspeed to Dr. Ernst Keisling and all of the honorable women and men at Texas Tech.
